seriously WTF ending

what the hell was that did they get confused and swap their plans?

reply

No, she hit space debris and couldn't get it back on course for earth. He was taken over by Calvin and couldn't use manual steering to keep the pod away from earth. It was all pretty obvious

reply

yeah right super strong and intelligent , unkillable alien seems to know it all, how bout make it speak our language as well.

reply

I agree. The creature coulden't even open hatches on its own but now all of a sudden it could safely steer a pod towards earth after manual overide was engaged.

reply

Except it wasn't steering, it didn't need to, the pod was already on the right trajectory. Norman was trying to get it off that trajectory and Calvin knew all it had to do was stop Norman steering the pod. It probably didn't know why it was doing what it was doing, other than it had to stop the human from doing whatever they are doing.

reply

It wasn't that obvious to me. We coulden't really distinguish which pod hit space debri or which way they were going. Heck I didn't even see a pod hit space debri everything was just motion blurr. And I distinctly remember the scene show the pod with calvin in it then cut to a shot of the pod hurdling towards space. Then the next shot shows the woman saying come on come come on and cut to a shot of her pod entering the atmosphere.

If the exterier shots were switched to through the audience off rather then make the 2 pods seem ambigous then shame on the editor for contriving our conclusion that the plan had worked.

reply

Sorry, but it was pretty obvious which pod got hit by debris, watch the scene again and have your palm ready for your face ;)

reply

No kalima the camera angles were diliberatly set up to suggest the woman was going to earth while the man was going into deep space. This was done on purpose to give us the shock ending were the roles were reversed. On second viewing I did see one of the ships bump but it was pretty fast so its easy to miss on first viewing. But it not being obvious was the whole point of giving us the shock ending.

reply

Different perspective I suppose. I was thinking her pod was going to explode through re-entering due to the damage, for a moment I figured they're both going to die.

reply

I figured the ending was gonna be a downer of some sort but wasn't expecting the humanity is doomed ending and she's hurtling off into space complete downer ending. I thought perhaps they would both die and we'd see calvin frozen in orbit or something(Like oh no he's not gone yet) right before the credits roll or something.

reply

Haha, yeah, the apocalyptic ending did come as a surprise, never really saw that coming. It definitely makes the film more memorable than if it had the typical ending.

reply

Despite what one user says, it was not obvious. Or at least, only in hindsight (and aided with rewind / replay).

What is obvious is that the filmmaker was attempting to convince us that he was going to space, she was going to earth, all for the shock value of having it be the other way around.

Yes, we all saw her hit debri, but the scene editing after that STILL led us to believe that she was on the correct trajectory, including the performances from both actors.
Only AFTER it was revealed to us that they were switched did we see the actors actually show distress.
It was story-telling dishonesty and I felt cheated by the ending.

That's why I will give it a low rating and why it has a semi-low average rating already. It was actually pretty decent up to that point (a 7/10), but will now get a smaller vote from me.

Yes, the ending would have been less impressive if it ended the way we were being led to believe it was ending. To make that better, it would have only required someone to write it better.
