Rory's Car

So in the revival, Fall I guess specifically we see Rory driving a brand new Prius. I know that's what she drove in the old show. But Lorelai still had the same Jeep. Not sure why Rory wasn't still driving her old car. She doesn't have any money, credit and is broke when the show opens in 2016. Yet she drives a newer car. Unless Emily got it for her...and yet she had been living in Brooklyn and traveling all the time why did she even need a car? She has Luke take her to the airport. So did she buy the car in Fall? Or a little before. How could she afford that and make payments when she is broke and has no credit? Maybe they just needed her to have a car to drive in Fall and the old car was gone but she was still going to have a Prius and we are supposed to ignore the fact that it was new. Either way not sure how she bought and paid for a new Prius unless it was just given to her...anyone else think that?

I assumed it was a rental.

But it could be a new car - She got her trust fund when she was 25 and Richard´s inheritance, and we all know she was not broke in the real "I am broke" kinda way.

Then again in the other episode, she told Jess that she has no car and forgot to renew her driver's license, so this could mean the fall Prius was a rental and she renewed her driver´s license by then.

Yeah it could of been a rental. But it was what she drove before...honestly at first I was thinking that they wanted us to pretend it was the same car she always had...just new and shiny. I don't know maybe it's a loaner or some one got it for her...or she had bought it back when the trust fund still existed.

I know she still had some money. But I do fully believe Rory was broke. No credit. Sure she still had clothes to wear despite what she says, had places to crash and some how could travel and keep three phones. However she couldn't afford her Brooklyn apartment anymore. And she had to stop traveling and move back home. So I would think by then she couldn't afford a new car. And besides a rental is still expensive.

I don´t believe she really couldn´t afford the Brooklyn apartment anymore, in the sense that she really had now money, but rather she didn´t want to pay for it anymore because she never spent time there and from her point of view it was a waste of money.

Of course, because she had no income and only the money from trustfund and/or inheritance left, she probably knew eventually she would really run out money, so why not just give up the crappy apartment now, instead of waiting months and wasting the money.

She stopped traveling because she had no reason - Rory had two reasons to travel: Logan´s fiance came to town, so Rory couldn´t be there and she had no other reason to travel. Secondly, the deal with the crazy women (River Song, whatyamacalit) fell through so no reason to travel.

I know your trying to be logical because yes obviously she still had some money to live on. But the writers totally forgot about the trust fund...and act like she has no family money. I don't understand how at 32 she says she has no credit. That blew my mind. They are trying to make us think that she was pretty much broke.

reply

Well, if she showed that attitude while working as we see in the 4 movies over the last 8 years, then it is not a surprise that she has no credit, because she barely worked, and spent her complete trust fund during 25 and 31. She was freelance journalist, which is not a good job for someone that lazy and unprofessional like Rory. In the movies we see some offers, but neither worked out - So unemployed, no income, but she still shows no better attitude in working, no instead she takes up the SH Gazette, where she gets no money at all.

So either she is not really broke in the sense that someone is broke or she just knows, like always, she just has to go to Lorelai and Emily to get money.

So either it is crappy writing or the typical rose-colored glasses ASP has on when she writes about Rory.

But I never bought that Rory really is broke.
