This is a parody, right?

There are just so many cliche techniques, unbelievable scenes, and cheesy lines. It takes me back to the ideology of 80's action movies. The writers are surely aware, but is the audience?

No

Why do you say that?

reply

I don't know

What film would it be a parody of?

Both old and new big budget action films like The Avengers, Mad Max, Face/off, Skyscraper. I'd also include mafia movies where the attempt to make protagonists look/sound cool precedes writing. Pretty much anything with a ridiculous plot and effects that takes itself seriously.

mmm, not sure about Avengers or Face/Off if you're meaning tonally - I mean these are both pretty tongue in cheek as it is with probably even more humor than F&F itself.

Maybe specific scenes in Mad Max but couldn't really say for sure...

For me, they're more Bond than anything. Although, surprisingly, I don't think they've had an underwater car yet.

Bond took a serious turn in terms of tone through editing. I see where they could be similar in terms of over the top stunts, even with Bond's being far more rooted within the realm of possibility. I say this because we had close ups of Vin Diesel delivering stupid lines and musical cues for character entrances that seemed so corny that at least to me could not be taken seriously. The 3 other people I know to have seen it also felt the same way.

I see what you're saying with Avengers being pretty similar. I agree with that. Personally I hate the Avengers films and find them to be a headache. They're just so well loved by many I figured they had to be being taken seriously.

I also don't think Mamoa was similar to any modern Bond villain. He played up eccentricities like they do, but his performance was more akin to Nic Cage than Javier Bardem.

reply

Sorry, yes should have clarified not Craig "Bond" but the proper Moore / Brosnan styling of the past. In terms of ott spectacle and Stunts, F&F seems to me to their spiritual successor.

I agree re Momoa - definitely more Nic Cage, he hammed it up to 11 but the film was all the better for it. To be fair I'd say Bardem did camp it up as well though, just not as effectively.

Could be a fantasy movie, or someone's dream.
