Okay...so they have Josie and Cheryl Blossom, but what about the other comic book spinoff, Sabrina the Teenage Witch? She was a Riverdale resident and let's face it, the 90s sitcom on ABC didn't do her justice. It would be cool to see her using her special gifts to solve mysteries.
If the show's successful, they'll probably introduce her in later seasons. But, considering the spin-off potential, I'm sure it'll be a big deal as far as casting and introducing her in a way that can expand into a spin-off series.
I totally agree. "Let's take another good-hearted, all-American icon and make it dark and perverse!"
Not only is it evil, it's creative cowardice. They've got the IP, so they'll bend the IP to suit the downbeat, anti-human agenda to make today's youth nihilistic, shallow narcissists while simultaneously torpedoing the memories of their elders. The series can't be cancelled fast enough and forgotten.
You Can't be cancelled fast enough. Stop. Nobody wants your Wussy garbage you are spewing. Old people don't have much longer for a reason, They are obsolete.
And I don't think I've heard anybody use the word "wussy" in, like, 20 years. You might be young in age--which I doubt--but you've sure got an old person's obsolete language skills. Enjoy your 8-10 episodes of "Riverdale" before it is roundly rejected by smarter Americans in demos across the board and cancelled.
Another pretentious person who thinks intelligence relates to enjoyment of a film. Macgruber got plenty of decent reviews, but that's besides the point; my personal ratings are opinions not critiques. enjoy your wine and food pairings old man. You were probably bullied in high school and never learned to suck it up so you are just angry at anybody having more fun than you.
So, you seem pretty unfamiliar with the Archie comics. You're complaining about this show being dark when the comics themselves explore dark subject matter. There's even an alternate reality version of Archie in the comics that's straight horror and deals with the zombie apocalypse.
It seems odd that you make complaints about something you don't even know. I guess you just like to complain.
I was never a fan of that comic either, though. It reminded me a lot of Marvel Zombies except minus the self awareness. Life with Archie (The Married Life) dealt with actual mature subject matter, as the cast were adults and had to deal with real world problems that some of us face. But at least Life with Archie, while definitely dealing with soap opera elements, felt less 'GRIMDARK' than this. I have mixed feelings on Riverdale, though I do want to give it a chance.
From what I have read it looks like the makers of Riverdale are very aware of how much the fans would love to see Sabrina and they are in the process of working it out. They are quite excited about it. I think that they just want to focus on getting the show properly in action before they get to that. But its definitely in the works and they are very enthusiastic about bringing Sabrina on board.
The thing is, although the show appears to be embracing an element of 'weirdness' (with the "Twin Peaks" comparisons, etc.) I can't imagine how Sabrina, as she is in the comics, would fit into it. Having a character who possesses magical powers and a talking cat takes it into a whole other genre. I guess she could simply be a practicing Wiccan or something..?
I recall reading at least once they had considered doing Halloween specials that would take cues from "Afterlife with Archie" and "Chilling Adventures of Sabrina", but the impression I got is that they would be standalone holiday episodes. I wonder if that's fallen to the wayside?
Frankly, Sabrina deserves her own new show. "Chilling Adventures..." is fantastic, and would make a potentially great teen horror show. There's a gap in the market for something along those lines, I think.
Riverdale's writer has said that we wouldn't see Sabrina using magic on the show. My guess is that if Riverdale is a success then they would eventually do a spinoff Sabrina show where her powers would be explored.
Yeah, I wonder if they did adapt "Chilling Adventures" that it would have to be on The CW? There might be a contractual thing in place, covering Archie titles... I think The CW is a fine fit for "Riverdale" but I'd rather see Sabrina on FX or TNT or something.
Anyway, Sabrina will be in "Riverdale" after all. It was reported a while back she will appear in the season finale as a 'cult escapee', which I guess is this show's way of incorporating the 'witch' aspect of her character without going full on supernatural. So far, I haven't seen anything to suggest "Riverdale" will have those elements.
"Cult escapee" makes me think that's the show's way of referencing Sabrina originally being a witch, without overtly protraying her as one with magical abilities. That said, we know little about the show overall maybe there will be some supernatural elements incorporated???
I believe a producer for the show said something along the lines of, if supernatural elements do enter the show it wouldn't feel out of place. The established tone hints something supernatural COULD be happening.
I think you may have meant the final seasons didn't do her justice. Sabrina on the WB in the 00s was not as well received or liked as Sabrina on ABC in the 90s. I loved the first few seasons! Very comical and whimsical.
The creator/showrunner for the show said that she'll be introduced in the season finale after she escaped from a cult. He said this at the EW interview at ComicCon back in July.
I just read Chilling Adventures of Sabrina last week. It's *amazing*. One of my favorite comics ever, I think.
I *really* hope they'll allow Sabrina to still be a witch and that we get a spin-off by season 3, hopefully even by the time Riverdale season 2B premieres. I doubt they'd do something as dark as CAOS but I'd hope they would take several cues from it: Have Sabrina at least dabble in black magic, have devils and lots of scary magic. :)
If The CW puts a Sabrina show in development I might finally forgive them for getting rid of The Secret Circle.
_____
"No! He is imprinted on you like a gay duckling. If you don't wean him off you slowly, he'll die."
Well this Sabrina will be darker than the sitcom version, so quite different. I just hope they keep the aunts in it. Although I hope they get things right from the failed secret circle.
Wonder if the plan down the track is doing a witch themed night with charmed and Sabrina. But I just know fans will complain why are they rebooting these witch shows, they want the originals back. So not sure how it will go along, maybe charmed can be used a testing and they get it right from how bad secret circle turned out.
Eventhough Sabrina tv show was on CW at the end, they dont have the right to Sabrina. CBS does. So if they dont have their permission, chances are they cant use her. Or if CW doesnt want to share the proceeds, they may not ask for the rights.
CW is co-owned by WB and CBS. Where are you getting that CBS still owns the franchise? They have already said on interviews that Sabrina will appear on the finale but without powers.
Back at San Diego Comic-Con in 2015, Archie Comics CCO Roberto Aguirre-Sacasa briefly spoke to HitFix Harpy about Riverdale, which was still in development at the time. He hinted that “a version of Sabrina [the Teenage Witch]” wasn”t out of the realm of possibility for the show. With imagery like the one above, a little hint of supernatural would fit right in.
