The cost of death penalty

What struck me as curious was that, on an episode where Richard Thomas is sentenced to death, they discuss how expensive it is, and, on his previous show, The Americans, they demonstrate how quick, painless, simple and cheap it is when they executed Nina.

Fighting a religious war is like fighting over whose imaginary friend is better.

When a person is on death row they can appeal after appeal and are usually on death row for 20 years before execution. There are fewer executions in the US. Some people opt for life in prison vs trial where they put the death penalty on the table. There was one where I lived where the guy was willing to plead guilty for life in prison without parole and they decided to try the case anyway and spent thousands of dollars and time and jurors and some of the evidence was graphic and whether the state offered or provided it, some of those people including those testifying needed therapy. End result, life (now this guy can appeal)

Nina was executed in Russia, no fanfare, no appeal, no expense.
It is very expensive in the U.S. Cheaper to incarcerate for life.
