Katy Mixon too young for this role

She's only 35. And she has a 15 year old daughter. And yes, I know it is possible for 20 year olds to be married and have babies, but she seems like she would have been at least a little bit older when she got married, considering that she talks about how she had a promising career and was getting promoted through the company. It sounded like the kind of job that you would need a college education for, and it sounds like she would have been there for at least a few years before leaving to become a full-time mom, meaning she was probably realistically in her late twenties at the very least when she got married and became a mom. I think they should have hired an actress that was a little bit older, maybe 5 to 10 years older.

Katy is 35 - have they established that Katie is 35 as well? I don't recall them stating her age.

**~Not my circus, not my monkeys...~**

reply

Bingo. The actress may be 35, but that certainly doesn't mean the character is 35.

reply

Yet again, we're confusing an actor's chronological age with his/her character's age.

It's a losing game -- because people are called upon to play characters much older or younger than they are in real life.

reply

In this case it's only a few yrs. Not a huge deal at all. If she was supposed to be 45, then maybe it would be a bigger issue.

reply

She doesn't look older than 35...

reply

She does to me. I'm 32 and she looks like she could be my mom. Granted people still seem to think I look like I'm in my early 20s, but she definitely looks like someone that could be in her early 40s to me.

reply

Humblebrag into an insult. Classic.

reply

I would have thought she was in her 40s. She doesn't look 35 to me at all.

reply

Oh,come on---the main character is clearly in her 30's,not in her 40's. The reality is, there are people who look younger or older than their actual age---I've always looked younger than my actual age myself, so I know that realistically happens. Also, there are people who had kids in their teens, and became parents at a young age (not recommended.) Besides, her kids are young---obviously she had them in her mid-20s--not hard to figure that out.

reply

She's 38 now and looks much older. Really deep lines in her face. It's her own fault for making those snarky faces all the time.

reply

I was just thinking too when watching this that the character seems like shes meant to written more as 40-ish. I always forget Katy Mixon's only in her 30s, something about her always seemed older, even when she was still in her late 20s on Eastbound & Down she seemed more late 30s on that show.

reply

She is supposed to be a Duke alum. Pretty unlikely she would have done that and had a kid at age 20.

reply

I agree that she looks older than 35, but maybe that's because she's playing a character that seems to be about 40. Does anyone really think they should only hire actors and actresses that are the same age as their character? Most people that play teenagers or usually past their teens. And plenty of adults have been cast way out of their age group too. No big deal.

reply

35 is old enough to have a 15 year old daughter.

reply

I think all these people thinking she looks older are responding to her styling.

I agree with you, she's a little young. She's playing a character that is at least 6 years older than she is.

reply

She's perfect for this role I'm 35 with a 14 and 12 year old, life happens and keeps moving. Kids grow fast, the mom is full grown and her aging process has slowed. Watch Bad Moms with Mila Kunis she looks too young but in reality it adds up. I think the thought is the lower class have kids young but reproduction doesn't discriminate.

reply

Moses was 120 years old. I don't think Charlton Heston was quite that old. ;-)

reply

35 is getting up there.

Her husband is a college prof. In the early (non-tenured) years, it's common to work on an ad-hoc basis for a crap salary. Usually they become a "freeway flyer" & stretch themselves thin across several jobs just to make ends meet.

But his wife was making good money. Would have made sense for him to instead focus on home life while she continues working to supplement his earnings. They split the home duties while both work outside the home. This is possible, especially as telecommuting has become more common.
