Sex scene

Was the moment that I realised this show wasn't on HBO. ;-)

I'm confused, only 1 condom?

Anyway, good stuff. Cute that they're out and running into the sunset with a broken bike. That's close to their dream. :-)

reply

Well, not to be too graphic, but if they had penetrative sex, they would only need one condom.

I too loved the ending with the two boys running with Lukas's bike. I didn't like to tone of Gabe and Helen's ending though. I know that the writers meant it to be a sweet scene, but the tone was so somber that it seemed as though they were planning a suicide pact.

reply

I suppose I don't understand. Wouldn't they need two condoms so they could both penetrate?

I loved the ending of Philip and Lukas too. It was fun and playful. And we know Lukas was going to kiss Philip publicly at the party.

I would have preferred that the series had ended with Philip and Lukas running towards the sunset, instead of the more somber (yet sweet) scene with Helen and Gabe. Didn't the show start with them rowing? Maybe they wanted to go full circle.

I will miss the boys! :-(

reply

Okay, again, I don't want to get flagged by the IMDB board moderators so I'll try to keep this PG. Typically, when two guys have sex, one is the penetrator and one is the penetratee. Therefore, if you're only going to have sex once, you only need one condom.

Though, as Lukas just had surgery/woke up from a coma, I don't see how he and Philip were able to have penetrative sex at all. Either option seems like too much exertion for someone in Lukas's condition.

Of course, I tried not to let my brain go down that logical rabbit hole because then I would have been forced to acknowledge the other very unrealistic aspects of the scene. I just wanted to enjoy it for what it was, a sweet moment between two kids in love.

I hadn't thought about the show coming full circle with Gabe and Helen on the water, that is a nice touch.

reply

@ironicshowchoir, thank you for explaining, I understand now.
Yes, better stay out of the logistical rabbit hole and just enjoy it for what is was. :-)

I think the very first scene is a shot of Gabe and Helen lying still in their cano in the water. It was their thing. They had their struggles and now at the end they have found each other again and are back to being close. Everybody we cared about is where they were expected to be from the beginning, I think. :-)

I assumed the implication was that Lukas will be lying on his back and Philip will take charge and move, to prevent Lukas from being in too much pain. Also assumed the condom was meant to go on Lukas as Philip doesn't use it himself, but in both scenes where he takes it out, he offers it to Lukas. So I don't know, I found the show to have been more mindful of the realistic aspect that an injured person can't have wild, passionate sex than any other show I've seen so far. Also, found it to be a sweet, emotional touch, that Philip is taking care of Lukas and that Lukas can lay back and let him.

Well Luke was on his back. They easily would have had to do it missionary with Phillip on top. Considering Luke was aching on his chest, he wouldn't have had any problems performing sex in this position and it's not like Philip would have been pressed down on him.

"Wouldn't they need two condoms so they could both penetrate?"

Exactly. Not everyone is a strict top or bottom. ASMOF, most are not. Being "versatile" is......comment se dis......FABULOUS!

reply

While I do find that most gay couples in the long run tend to be versatile, that is not a strict requirement. They can have penetrative sex without switching and not as the above poster seemed to imply that there is no other option if they're gonna do that. If they start out with only Lukas penetrating Philip, it means nothing for what they will do sexually down the line, one way or another. They may move on to switching. They may not. There is no set of rules. You can get off your high horse now.

The whole damned show was somber. The gloomy texture of the colors against what is a beautiful part of the USA (Upstate NY) was quite depressing.

You would have thought that the last scenes would have been sunny and colorful.

reply

show was filmed in Ontario Canada

reply

It may have been in Canada, but the setting was upstate New York. All that is besides the point.

In post production, they manipulate the color, contrast and brightness to create a somber mood. Ever notice there is virtually no color to this except for a green hue?

That is the point I am making.

reply

They did give it a somber tone through the use of coloring, but they did the same with The Killing, another show based on a Scandinavian origin. I guess it's to stay loyal to the somber tone of those first versions.
