That's what made it interesting. Suggesting this demon is extremely powerful, as the exorcist has already stated in the first episode.
The perfect evil entity would lead you to believe you're going crazy. So that fear and self doubt foster an anxiety/panic driven psychological problem. Then it goes in for the kill when the priest is most vulnerable.

It's really interesting, because it's the Demon that is bringing the Priest into the picture. It's not a sign from God. I think it wants to possess the priest.
It's toying with him. Making him wonder who is the Demon actually possessing. Do you think it's one Demon or many Demons?

I hope it's more than one.
It would be interesting to see the different demon personalities ranging from the almost bestial to highly sophisticated ones who would try to debate him in theology or offer him esoteric secrets.
Demons in literature operate like big game hunters. Driving a priest insane and then killing him is one hell of a trophy.
