Has Marcus lost his touch?

I couldn't hear everything so may have missed some dialogue in the second episode. Why are the demons no longer afraid of Marcus? How was that demon able to mock him and have no affects when Marcus was using the cross, etc.?

I'm loving this show. I accidentally caught the first one last week without knowing it was being made. I'm a bit of a TV snob and typically only watch HBO and some AMC but this show is fantastic.

HBOis not everything. They made one of the worst shows in the history of television: Girls. And yes CC so you don't miss any dialogue. That's what we do. I believe that Marcus is weak right now and has little power but will be regained over the course of the season.

The demons think he can't cast them out any longer because he failed with the boy who had his neck broken.

He used to be the one they all feared because a demon hadn't beaten him before.
Now they know he can be beaten, so they all believe they have the upper hand in a confrontation with him.

He most likely carries a shadow of doubt from the defeat, and they are using it against him.

He wants to kill the demons, but they sense his lack of faith. Their mocking him makes him doubt his own ability.

reply

They find his lack of faith............disturbing.

Ah, well said.

Thank you!

I'm really enjoying the show, especially the Father Marcus character portrayal.

I guess the one thing that kind of through me off was that I always thought there was power in invoking God and using the cross. Kind of like how a vampire reacts to the cross, doesn't matter who's using it.

reply

I think the cross itself has no power in Blatty's story/universe.
Remember what the demon had Regan do with a crucifix in the original Exorcist?

I'm seeing his lack of faith as a spiritual impotence.
A mental block that's keeping him from believing in the power of faith, which, in turn, becomes reality.

I haven't seen any evidence that Marcus has ever had the upper hand with this demon. It's been an ongoing battle.

It's a good time to foment doubt in the priests, as we saw with Father Marcus. Losing Gabriel was a big loss to him. He lost the child and went through a - possibly still going through - a loss of faith called The Dark Night of the Soul.

The impression I get is that exorcisms are a test of wills. Father Marcus' will isn't very strong right now because of what happened to the boy in Mexico. It is this will that he has to find within himself once again to be able to prevail.
