FOX is considering renewing the show. However, we won't know their decision until May. :(

It's possible there might be a renewed interest in both the original movie and novel since Blatty has just passed away.
Since FOX already has this show with Blatty's permission, they might just ride with it now for a second season to see if it'll pick up more viewers.
Don't be surprised if they green light it.
I think The Exorcist is either the lowest-rated show or one spot above being the lowest that aired on FOX during the Fall 2016 season. A network never renews ALL of its shows from the previous season; those at the bottom are culled from the herd.
It's almost a certainty this show is not returning to air. Not on FOX, anyway.

Did you read the article? The head of FOX says in the article that they are meeting with the show runners to discuss ideas for season two. If the show runners pitch a good enough overview for season two it could very well get a renewal. I think that FOX realizes that one big reason for the shows dismal ratings was that it A. had a terrible time slot and B. it had very little promotion but in spite of all that the show developed a very loyal following and was liked by critics.

Yet another internet bully who uses insults to make his argument instead of valid facts. As was already stated, The Exorcist is not even the lowest rated show on FOX and excuse me for deciding to listen to the person who is actually in charge of making the decision instead of some forum troll who doesn't even like the show and wants it to be canceled. I have no problem with differing points of view and opinions but when you use insults and bully tactics like a child instead mature, thoughtful discussion I'm not going to participate, so I'm done with this conversation with you and welcome to my ignore list.
