Did the mountain lion eat a third victim?

Thank God for Moviechat, and a pox on IMDb! This is my first post at MC, yaaaay!!!

Question: when he (Renner) found the mountin lion in its den growling, there was what appeared to be the bones of a human carcass. Then, snowmobile tracks leading away and down to the portable homes that housed those scummy workers.

I think this indicates that they (or one of them) brought a body to the cat to get rid of the dead person, but!

who was it? They found Natalie, they found her dead boyfriend, so who else was killed?

And how come there isn’t already a thread with this question/answer? TiA

Good question ! I recall the scene but not the human carcass ( are you sure that's what it was ? ). It was kind of brief. I've had my own questions although I liked this movie overall.

Ya, I think it was a human. It was the rib cage of a human, a very big human. And then he followed the snowmobile track and saw where it led to, then he tried to radio the police chief. When he finally got through to the chief that’s when the chief yelled: “Jane! get away from the door!” I just watched the movie last night, you probably saw it a long long time ago, right? But whose rib cage was it???

reply

I saw it in the theater last year after its release. If I get the chance to rewatch it ( on DVD would be ideal ), I'll look for that more closely.

*thumbsup!*

I didn't pick on that. I'm going to rewind this scene tomorrow and look out for it.

okeydokey,

I thought that was her boyfriend's body. If not, when did they find his? I can't remember it.

reply

Well I just watched the movie last night and I don’t remember exactly when, but it was prior to the party going out to the work camp. Sometime before that they found a body and it was Matt’s. I will have to watch it again to know the exact timeline but I’m pretty certain that they did find a body prior.

reply

Oh yeah, it was when Cory and Jane went off by themselves. You're right.

I think those are just more deer remains, like the half-eaten deer just outside the den. Deer torsos are pretty big as well.

reply

Well it was a pretty big rib cage! But there was a reason why Renner was calling the police chief (after staring at the snowmobile track), to warn him of something, no?

So what was his message to the police chief? As soon as the chief talked to him (Renner) he gave Jane the warning. I assumed he was telling the police chief that they (from the work camp) had disposed of a victim by giving it to the mountain lions. So if that wasn’t a human, then????

reply

I think "the big reveal" there is the return tracks he was looking for. That's what he was telling the chief, that the other workers did it. Just before he and Jane head up the mountain and find the boyfriend's body, he show's her the faint tracks heading up the mountain and says something like "... there are no return tracks. Why is that? I'm telling you, the answers are up there." So, I'm assuming they dumped the boyfriend's body there and drove her snowmobile back to their camp, leaving the return tracks. I guess with the lion, it's supposed to be some sort of cosmic/spiritual/supernatural type thing that leads to him discovering the return tracks. After all, that's how he discovered her body in the first place, tracking the lion who killed the man's steer.

Omg! How insightful! And no mystery victim! By jove, I think you've got it! I'm in the process of rewatching it today, so I will see all this again. Thanks for illuminating this for me!

Like you said, it was probably a deer carcass, not a human, like I thought. I think your explanation erases all the unanswered questions in my op. Thanks!

No problem, it was a fun discussion. Talking about it with you cleared a lot up in my mind as well.

reply

Yes it was, thanks for clearing that up for me!
