Would be better with a Native actor...

as the veteran game tracker on the reservation instead of that overcooked potato Renner.

This is Sheridan's third script. In his first, a woman was the lead, the best supporting role was Mexican and one of the other two was black. In his second film one of the four main characters was Native Amercian, it wasn't essential to the story that he be Native American but Sheridan chose to write him that way. In this film there are a significant number of roles for Native Americans. Without knowing details of the story it is impossible to say whether Renner or Olsen's roles would be appropriate for a native actor, but based on Sheridan's other work I think he deserves the benefit of the doubt.

There are other issues though, which the acutely PC will dismiss, but have a real practical impact on film making. This film is already being talked about as a "Hawkeye and Scarlet Witch" team up, which will not harm the box office. They will also advertise it with 'twice oscar nominated Jeremy Renner' which will help too. This is a low budget film with a first time director and he will need all the help he can get to turn a profit. Directors like Spielberg, Scorsese and Nolan can open their own films, they don't need an established star, and are in a perfect position to bring on new actors and champion diversity. Sheridan is getting things done, not just talking about it. Maybe you should target those other directors first.

I always hated that. Diversity is great when not forced.
I hate all those celebrities that are always crying about diversity but then don't do a damn thing to use their power to create more diversity. They're just talk. Okay you wish there was more diversity but you're still casting yourself or best friends in your own movies George Clooney or Ben Affleck. Ben's in a position now where he doesn't have to star in his next non-Batman film. But he's also got an ego to fill, and that's the problem.

I think more than 99.5% of us have no idea what that means. Does it have anything to do with a "game tracker on the reservation"? I know nothing about the movie. If the game tracker is on the Native American reservation then it makes sense that he be Native American. All that Hollywood stuff is not relevant. I assume you think it is relevant so you can show off.

I think I made it clear why I felt each point raised was relevant. This is a movie site and I love movies, consequently I have a fair amount of 'hollywood' knowledge to hand. It isn't about 'showing off', it is about wanting to discuss a topic I find interesting. So to add to the discussion I have some more relevant information......

This week the writer/director Taylor Sheridan was asked why his protagonist was not a Native American. He basically said he wrote the character as a white man who is a father and who has lived on a reservation, because he was a white man and a father who has lived on a reservation. He said this film was very personal to him and he wanted to raise issues he had become aware of, but he had still only been a outsider with a level of acceptance and he didn't feel qualified to write his main character as a Native American.

That's better. Most of us can understand that and it certainly seems relevant.
