The Hellhole of Europe - seriously?

One of the Americans in the movie utters a line with a sneer of disgust and remarks that Brussels is the hellhole of Europe ... seriously?

I hope it was used to characterize the inane character of the American than anything else ... because seriously, compare the violent crime rates of Brussels with that of a comparable American city and it won't even be close.
