IMDb top 250
Does this movie deserve a place?
shareNo, just an average drama and already accused of copying a Korean movie I believe. The distinction between entertaining and great is something that audience of South Asian cinema needs to understand.
But yes I don't blame them since the most entertaining movies usually gets the big commercial people's choice awards (like Filmfare Awards) where as the good critically acclaimed movies are given the low key national awards nobody cares about. Whereas Cannes and most times Oscars are critics awards compared to People's Choice/MTV awards.
If Oscars are awarded in the same style as Filmfare Awards, then Transformers would win 14 Oscars.
Aynabaji, 3 Idiots, Lagaan and such are people's choice awards movie rather than good critically acclaimed movie. Hence, the reason why people complains about their inclusion in IMDb Top 250.
On the other hand no one cares to rate any of the Satyajit Ray's movies which are universally acclaimed and most people will be happy to see them in Top 250 List considering there are 5 of Kurosawa's, 3-4 of Fellini's, 3-4 of Bergman's movies in the top 250.
Among the current generation directors, Rituparno Ghosh's movie(s) may deserve to be in the top 250, but hey his movies are too boring for the South Asian mass audience and no one votes for them.

Lagaan was actually one of the 5 best foreign films shortlisted for the Oscars. I am not so sure that it was not critically acclaimed by well known Western critics.
