Has it ever been established if the kids are in private or a Catholic school?
Also, are they both supposed to be in high school?

shareCatholic schools are private schools here in the U.S. Some private schools have grades pre-school- 12 grade. That is why Elena and her brother go to the same school. He is probably in 7th grade while Elena is probably a sophomore. That is why he knows all the same gossip as his sister.
In other parts of the world are Catholic schools run differently? I could see why OP would question the difference.

I live in the United States and attended a Catholic school. The grammar schools here are usually kindergarten through eighth grade, and the high schools are usually 9 through 12. This is for New Jersey it might be different in other parts of the country.
shareI'm sure it varies from region to region depending on the diocese. Where I live the diocese schools have separate high schools (one co-ed, one all girl, one all boy), but there are several Catholic schools that are independent from the diocese and they go from pre-k thru 12th grade.

I went to an Episcopalian school that was grades 7-12, so it could also be something similar to that.
