The artist Jheronimus Bosch, despite being dead for five hundred years, hovers over this fascinating little documentary about the behind-the-scenes preparations for two exhibits of his paintings to celebrate the quincentennial of his birth. Imagine that a medieval H.R. Giger mated with a 14th century Salvatore Dali and they had a baby who possessed the imagination of H.P. Lovecraft and the painting skills of Rembrandt, in order to gain a sense of the old master’s unique work. Now imagine that master giggling gleefully in the background as scientists, art historians, and museum bigwigs spar in a refined, restrained, and distinctly European high art telenovela about how many of the master’s supposed works he actually painted himself.
