Not the worst in the world......

You need to understand it's a Nick made for TV movie, they did a decent job with it. I would have liked to see a bit of a more mature theme like Are You Afraid of the Dark which was also on the network. It would have been a nod to the adults who watched this as a kid, they did alright though. By the lack of activity here though I wonder what the ratings were.

It wasn't bad. I'm pretty sure I would've enjoyed it more if I wasn't a LOTHT kid.

I agree it was ok for a kids TV movie. Only nitpick I have is they over did the Shrine of the Silver Monkey gag. I know it was a nod to players struggling to put it together back in the day but 4 hours between 3 people?

Your right to an opinion does not equal an opinion that is right

reply

to be fair, the youngest kid was an idiot, moving the bottom around. just leave it alone and move the other pieces till they matched

reply

Yea I agree. Think having them do it a few times would have been enough but saying it took them hours to do was ridiculous. They weren't that stupid.

Overall I agree with OP that it was a decent movie. Go in knowing it will be a Nick tv movie and not to have too high expectations helps. Enjoyed it for all the nods to the show and was an decent story. That said would have liked it to be a little more mature themed as well. The kids were a little annoying at times, especially the youngest. He really didn't seem to do much aside from finish the Silver Monkey. Almost wish he was cut out completely and think it would have been better.

Okay, I'll agree that the 4 hours to solve was pretty ludicrous, I've seen some contestants actually ace that one in a matter of a minute or less. The other gripes I have is the irresponsible parent cliche, the fact that Olmec's people speak English instead of some native tongue (since this is targeted to a young audience I won;t be so harsh on that matter), the fact that a red jaguar (it's acutally a cougar painted red) trapped in the temple for who knows how long seemed preposterous. The biggest complaint is the kid who can understand monkey language is implausible in my mind.

reply

You'll give a pass for Olmecs people speaking English, but have an issue with a Jaguar in a temple for a time where Snakes turn into stone, Temple Guards come back to life from stone, a magical barrier, and OLMEC?

And for the kid understanding the monkey, I just assumed that he couldn't really, just used it cause he's a kid.

I meant was how in the world did the jaguar (cougar) stay alive in the temple, caged and without any caretaker for who knows how long is just mind boggling.

They did a very nice job with it. They incorporated plenty of references to the original show (way more than I thought they would) without feeling forced or confusing to new viewers. The story was simple and we all knew everything would end in smiles and victory, but the constant nods to the original show, both obvious and subtle, were appreciated.

However, like I posted in another thread, the music from the original show was missing and that was a HUGE mistake in my book. They basically had an entire soundtrack already made for them, yet they went with very standard action-adventure music. The original music would have tied everything together so nicely and I can't fathom why they didn't use it.

reply

Did you know? David Stanley, who co-created the series, also composed all its original music. I agree the original cues would have fit in quite well -- for the most part, anyway -- a little tweaking would be in order, considering the gameshow-to-movie format change.

It would be rather interesting, though, if someone took the movie's video, dropped the audio and substituted / overlaid the original music onto the corresponding scenes.

Though, I don't think the movie did nearly as good as it could have with the "three-minute run" segment. The original "Temple Run" had a diverse range of creatively bizarre puzzle-rooms, and created a genuine sense of urgency. The movie's re-envisioning of the "three minutes" kind of wasted a golden opportunity to re-create that.
