Slenderman and little internet searching

Ok, I looked at creepypasta and they mention SM is fake and say where he originated from, in parentheses they say "or is he". I found the original story post on SM from something awful dating from 2009. They all clearly state SM is and was photoshoped and on to congratulate the guy who gave SM a story/background. He was even approved upon within the origan SM story page. All users there clearly state he's fake.

So with youtube users posting additional comments, creepypasta and somethingawful all claiming it was a photoshop contest (dating back to 2009) I cannot for one second believe these girls didn't know it was all fake.

I have a hard time believing it as well. I remember a few years ago, my son (he's autistic) came home scared because a friend had told him about slenderman at school. He looked it up himself and felt a lot better when he saw that it was just a meme. I think he was 9 at the time.

Regardless, as long as there have been children, there have been boogeyman stories to scare them into behaving. My boogeyman was baba yaga who lived by the river, lol, grandma's way of keeping us away from the river. Anyway, point being, using a boogeyman as a defense strategy seems pretty ridiculous to me. It's something every child in history has grown up with.
