This show needs to be off of Netflix....

While it was great they saved the show after it was cancelled, they butchered it and it's run entirely. The first mistake was renaming it "Next Class" and creating a new show which made no sense when not only would the show not focus on the "next class" of freshman coming in to the school, but it's not like the show is going to end after they leave in four years. The show will go on and bring in other "next classes" as we've seen on Degrassi which is why "the next generation" was dropped from the title. The next mistake was giving the show only twenty episodes a year, releasing ten of them on two days out of the year and limiting the run so significantly and then making the seasons run only TEN episodes. Dumb. Dumb. DUMB.

Netflix needs to fix their mistakes by one, taking "next class" out of the title and making this show attached to the Degrassi one before it that ran fourteen seasons and merging these seasons together ("Next Class" S1-2: S15, and S3-4: S16 and so on), having more episodes produced like in the days of Degrassi Seasons 10-12. I'd liked that and it meant more time with the characters and this show doesn't seem that expensive to not pull it off now. They managed to do it then and seems reasonable to bring back since the cast and crew just have too much free time on their hands now the show is basically an after thought. If Netflix can't get their act right with this show, then it needs to go back to TV and we can get the structure right. Yes, I'm aware it airs on the Family Channel in Canada but they don't own the rights and there's no channel in the United States that airs it.

It sucks MTV Canada and TeenNick cancelled Degrassi for whatever reason. The biggest mistake they ever made.

Doug had to change it's name to "brand spankin' new Doug" then "Disney's Doug" when it went on abc.... Because Nickelodeon owns "doug" as a tv show name

The same could apply here.

teennick co-funded the show so It's very possible they may own or co-own the name "Degrassi" or "degrassi : the next generation"

The Doug title change was reasonable because it was a reboot for one and then it doesn't signify something that doesn't make sense anyway so I don't mind it. Degrassi's title change was stupid because we've had "next classes" and I'm sure they intend for this show to continue on after the current freshman class leaves after four seasons and then the show isn't even focused on them, but the characters that already originated on the last few seasons of Degrassi. If they HAD to change the title, it should have been something more reasonable but they shouldn't have because it was still going to be basically the same show with nothing really different so it mind as well have been "Degrassi" and thus the same show.

But in both this show and Doug's case, how do Disney and Netflix have the rights to make new episodes of both shows but can't use the same titles and have to slap on something? It doesn't make sense to me.

How were the Jackson 5 able to have the rights to make new music but couldn't use their original title?

Because when The Jackson 5 Left Motown and signed with Epic, They were free to make new music with Epic but could not continue as "The Jackson 5" becuase Motown claimed ownership of the name, So they became The Jacksons.

The Band Ednaswap, who's the original performer of the song "Torn" that was made famous by Natalie Imbruglia, They changed labels after their first album and were forced to change their name, too. However they cleverly got away with it by putting changing it to "Edna Swap" with a space in between.

The same applies to Doug. Jim Jinkins was free to take the show elsehwere as the Jackson family took their music elsewhere but couldn't use the same name.

so the same could apply to The Degrassi series

Well of course those people would be able to make new music. It's not like the companies own their persons. But their name? That's what they're best known as and it's only a name. Motown shouldn't be pissed with some one else using the Jackson 5 name. First off, the Jackson 5 performers are the ones really using it, just working under a new company and they'll be possibly getting royalties from whatever music comes out under the new company from a name Motown made anyway. If that's not the case then so what. What's the harm of the Jackson 5 still being such under some one else? Motown being stingy about it is like they're worried people will forget about the Motown era or something.

If they HAD to change the name of Degrassi, they should have picked something more suitable than "next class". That title makes no sense. "Degrassi Community School" would have been better. But I also didn't want a title change because it signifies a new show and unfortunately that's what ended up happening thus ruining the long run reign of TNG. Wasn't really a problem when the show went from "The Next Generation" to "Degrassi" because the show was still young and wasn't done to really signify a new show. But with it being practically a new era at this point of the NEW title change, Netflix and the crew took it for granted and thus, Next Class is it's own show.

So now if TNG airs in reruns, NC won't be airing after it and after Season 14 of that show airs out, it's back to Season 1. See? A mess. It should all be together since NC is a direct on continuation of TNG. It's not like shows like Joey which is a spinoff/sequel series to Friends that NEED to be whole with Friends or air after it because it only focuses on one of the main characters from the previous show in a whole new setting and there's other changes too. Shows like THIS where it's basically the same as the previous show and continues on as such mind as well be the same damn show with the same damn title!
