Canadians sure are fertile

Another pregnancy?

Canadian teens can't even hug without getting knocked up!

reply

But we haven't had an abortion story since like Season 1...of degrassi next generation

And the US didn't even air that one

reply

Thank you, I was trying to remember if Degrassi has ever shown an abortion before. It does seem like that there is a pregnant girl every season but I am glad if they had to do one, that they went with an abortion this time.

reply

There's been like four abortions on Degrassi my dude

reply

Degrassi has only covered pregnancy 7 times prior to Lola. 7 times in the long run the show has had isn't even that much honestly. Secret Life covered it 3 times in a matter of 5 seasons! It makes sense Degrassi covers teen pregnancy. Look at today's society, I can name over seven girls that were pregant at my school before graduation.
Literally every time Degrassi covers the topic of teen pregnancy it has a different outcome. Spike was pregnant in Degrassi: Junior High and she was kicked out of her school, shunned by her boyfriends parents. She deiced to kept the baby and raise her. Erica in Degrassi High had a abortion which had bad outcomes; she was bullied at school because of it and suffered emotional trauma. Tessa had an abortion in the movie School's Out because she felt like that's all she could do. Manny in S3 of DNG also had an abortion and her storyline was much like Tessa's but for a new generation. Liberty got pregnant in season 5 of DTNG but she gave it up for adoption. Jenna in season 10 who thought she could handle being a mom but realized she couldn't and Clare in season 14 who lost the baby. Every single pregnancy on the show has a different outcome and not to mention it's not a every two season thing by any means. Teen pregnancy happens all the time all over the world. Look up the facts.

reply

Also Mia and Dallas had children when they came onto the show. So they covered single parenthood as well.

reply

Manny's abortion was not like Tessa. Joey didn't know about Tessa's pregnancy, but Craig knew about Manny and actually wanted to keep the baby.

reply

But why did BOTH Manny and Tessa get an abortion because they didn't want to. Manny and Craig's storyline was a repeated version of Joey's from Schools Out and that's obvious.

reply

Look up the REAL stats, How many times have people had sex on Degrassi without getting pregnant or contracting an STD?

I am just saying maybe assess the stats when you "Look at today's society" how many people have sex compared to how many people actually get pregnant because their portrayal is no where near realistic.

reply

Your obviously a dumb bitch. I have looked up the facts. Have you? Obviously not. ?

reply

...

Spike, Mia, Dallas - Kept the babies (You can count Spike's 2nd unplanned pregnancy with Jack if you want, I guess)

Jenna and Liberty - chose adoption

Claire - miscarriage

Erica, Tessa, Manny, and Lola - abortions

10 pregnancies in 30 years for a school is not that shocking.

reply

10 pregnancy's from having sex 10 times is unbelievable.

I am just saying I don't think anyone has ever had sex on Degrassi without getting either pregnant or an STD.

reply

Ashley, Ellie, Paige, Ali, Spinner, Marco..for obvious reasons. A lot of them don't get pregnant. Emma got an std, from Jay of all people. And Darcy only got hers from her rape.

reply

If you took the whole of another country, like USA, the high school pregnancy rate (on average) was 24.2/1000 in 2014. That means if you took a school with say 300 girls, 7 of them got pregnant throughout the year. That was just the one year.

So... I don't really understand anyone in this thread saying this is some ridiculously high number, in one high school from 2001 to today. It's actually very, very low.

The national rate in Canada is pretty much the same now, so... like I said, if anything Degrassi's stats are way lower than reality.

reply

Well the OP has said, multiple times, that the issue is number of times having sex vs. number of times getting pregnant. And he/she has a point. Degrassi girls do seem to get pregnant every time they don't use protection.

reply

That's more of a cautionary tale though. It's not just on Degrassi (though Degrassi has been going on for so many seasons). It's a common trope with teen shows/movies.
