The return of former characters

People were wondering why certain characters didn't come back when they supposedly should have. For example, viewers were griping about Darcy(Claire's sister) not returning for Claire's cancer storyline and when she became pregnant. Also, griping about Owen returning for Tristan's storyline. What people don't think about is the fact that these actors/actresses may not be available to return at that particular time. I mean, I'm pretty sure that they have other projects and are not just sitting by the phone waiting for the producers to call them. Now, I'm not saying that Chloe Rose(plays Maya's sister, Katie) was, but she most likely didn't have any projects in the works when this season was written. They might've even asked her to return for season 1 or 2 but she was unable to.

Oh, I agree completely. I have never understood why this is (was) such a big deal for people. And to your post, I would add the question WHY. Why does it matter if old characters return? Who cares?! Does it add anything? Did everyone feel "complete" when Katie came back? I just don't get it ... yes it's cool to see old characters and to have some continuity but it is not the end of the world if we don't see them or they aren't mentioned. The writers are focused on the present and only have so many lines to tell their stories. They don't need the episodes to be cluttered with old characters returning just to satisfy people who are like "OMG why don't they mention Darcy?!"

I think people just get annoyed by the inconsistency. I understand availability of the actors and actress is a big part of it, but with the world now of twitter, facebook, instant messenger etc the actor don't need to be available. Some fake conversation through one of those platforms or even some text messages would suffice. Also it seems like they are brought up for some situations, but completely ignored for others. So while it doesn't have to be the actual human being showing up even an easter egg to show these people still exist would at least make it seem more realistic.

You're a fool.

Um yes, it adds quite a bit, fool. It let us know what they're doing now since we last saw them, how well they aged, and that they're not just forgotten. Plus it ties old characters and new characters together and the continuity between eras of shows is tight. The fact that we've had quite a few characters go through some horrific things, it's shocking to see their older siblings isn't even alerted on it and there's been quite a few times they're a no-show in things like this. Katie is like the first I think.

It's not meant to be "complete", but Katie coming into the picture made sense given how depressed Maya was at the moment and her mother felt she was the best person to reach out to to help her. And in case you haven't realized, characters CAN return just to say hello and let us know they're still there. Do you think when a character graduates and or leaves Degrassi at any point, they should just be gone for good and not mentioned?
I just don't get it ...

You don't get anything. Please leave the internet and don't come back until you do get it and can actually hold a meaningful conversation.
yes it's cool to see old characters and to have some continuity but it is not the end of the world if we don't see them or they aren't mentioned.

Seeing them isn't really the problem, but they should at least be mentioned so it's not like they're being treated as though they never existed. If their younger sibling is still on the show and for several more years at that, we should be hearing from them. It's not going to kill to throw in some dialogue on where they're at and what they're doing.

Oh please, we've had seasons where they had more than enough episodes to provide some info on past characters. Remember the 40+ episode amounts of Seasons 10-13 of the last show? It certainly wasn't going to kill to have an oldie pop up here and there. That many episodes and you're complaining? Please. Now it's understandable since they're only going TEN a season apparently but still, a MENTION can work especially if it's been a while since we've last seen said character and if their sibling is still around.

Wow, overreaction much? Nice namecalling too, by the way. I guess that is your version of a "meaningful conversation". No thanks! It's funny because your post proves my point about how fanatical some people are about seeing old characters return. As I said, I have never understood why this topic makes people so passionate.

Relax, I only called you a fool. And this was pretty much a meaningful conversation for the most part. I wasn't too angry with you and gone in on you further than I could have if I was really that much of a bitch. 

Well we have good reasons, something you never bothered to look into before complaining like you're so keen on not seeing them or thinking it's reasonable we shouldn't get an update every now and then (not even all that much) so it's not like they been dropped from existence.

Did you not read one thing I just said in that long comment? I basically cover this. Tsk. Tsk. And it's a shame you don't even address anything I said as though you couldn't answer anything. That pretty much shows me defeat right there. 

I'm more inclined to believe that they were asked, but they simply said no.

Claire's tragic storylines were on-going though. She was sick for long time, then pregnant, then lost the baby. Before that it was the whole thing with her boss harassing her. She had all this crap piled on and they didn't even mention Darcy once. Like they could've maybe said, oh Darcy came by the other day, or oh I was talking to Darcy on the phone and blah blah... That's on the writers, making it like Darcy never existed. And considering all Shenae had going for her was TV movies no one ever saw, I doubt her filming schedule was packed. My guess is they asked her and she simply said no.

And in this case, that's why you bring in another actress. There's a thing called RECASTING. Was Darcy even that popular for people to care if some one else plays her? They so should have gone that route to have her back for a few appearances, but if not they definitely should have mentioned her. She was mentioned a few times after she left the show as you can see here: http://degrassi.wikia.com/wiki/Darcy_Edwards, but they never disclosed if she was still in Kenya. She definitely should have been brought up again in Seasons 13 and 14.

reply

I'm not just talking about her. Raymond Ablack(Sav) and Chloe Rose(Katie) eventually came back so it's unlikely that they said no if they were asked before. Now I don't know about Daniel Kelly(Owen).
