It wasn't bad, but it wasn't amazing either. Minor spoiler

Well, you're entitled to your opinion of course :D but I loved this film more than any other I saw in 2016, and it's in my 'Top 5 movies' of all time (and I'm 49!).

I cannot of course put a finger on why I love this movie so much, but to me every second is perfect, even down to the little details you miss first time around such as the one second glance of Mitusuha's sister you get as a teenager and the reason why Mitusuha cut her hair (which I missed not once, but twice!).

Maybe I'm a decrepit romantic but despite the comet stuff this is (to me) a very original love story that's told in a way that's seldom been told before. There's so much to be resolved (a) will Mitusuha and Toki work out what's happening (b) will Mitusuha survive (c) will they ever meet if they can't remember each other ... you're dragged along hoping for a happy outcome ...

Not saying you are wrong of course, but these are just a few of the reasons this film resonates so strongly with me :D

I agree! Have you seen Shinkai's other films? He always make movies with the same themes: star-crossed, distance between lead characters. I thought the plot was just okay, and I couldnt fully appreciate the movie because of it. I think Shinkai should stay away from fantasy

Me too, I'm in the minority that can't see what that's special about Your Name. Even the plot is rather predictable and bland. The animation is pretty but nothing like Studio Ghibli, not even close. I far prefer Miyazaki's treatment of nostalgic teen romance - the wistfulness and subtleties I feel are more realistic and sensitively portrayed.

It's ok, average, quite forgettable. I actually prefer his previous works.

It was fine as you say. For me, the "I love you" moment was contrived and came out of nowhere, the ending was too drawn out and repetitive and it would have been more touching had the ending been more ambiguous. The ending really bothered me, because sitting in the cinema, there were at least two moments where I thought "ah, that's a good ending" but it just kept on going. The artwork was amazing, I loved the depiction of city life and the story was interesting. But I agree overall, just OK.

I liked it, and i think it's good, but Makoto Shinkai already made a film better than this one, Byousoku 5 Centimeter.

The movies was underwhelming for me. I came into this with the biggest expectations I've had for any movie in a while because I love good anime and this is being made out to be a life-changing masterwork of not just anime but all movies. People I know and whose taste I trust loved it too so I was really excited. Turned out it was a half-baked love story blown out of proportion.

It showed Makoto Shinkai's limit as a storyteller. I can tell he's passionate and want to convey some feelings to the audience but he doesn't have the necessary tact for intricacies in a high stake story. He's too caught up in this abstract concept of connecting through space and time and this omnipresent feeling of longing for someone you don't know you know that he doesn't bother to tell a coherent story in an engaging or believable way.

Anyway, I like the guy's animation style, it's perfect eye-candy. I used to have a slideshow of 50 random frames from his movies as my desktop. And everything is extra polished and colorful and epic in this one so that's a huge plus. As for the movie, I'd rather watch 5 cm per second again.

It's OK. It just means you're a heartless psychopath.

It is the best Shinkai movie by far.
