Stunning looking film

This movie is gorgeously animated. I don't think I've ever seen anything like it before. The nature scenes are breathtaking. The details of every leaf and rock are faultless. We went to see this tonight and we'd not heard of it before today. I love to be pleasantly surprised and I was. We could have done without the strange pop music in the score- pretty corny- but it didn't take away from the stunning visuals. Good story, definitely different from any American animated feature one might see. So good, I highly recommend seeing it in a theater with an audience. We had some teenagers sitting nearby and they loved it. They were clapping at the end, I think sincerely, no irony.

This was a very nice movie... however, if you've seen a lot of anime or Asian dramas... the story will feel very familiar. I think I remember a Chinese film called Comrades that had a similar scene involving a train. Agree that the animation was stunning and for those who haven't seen a lot of these shows I would highly recommend it.

If you have some recommendations, I'd appreciate it. There's something special about this type of animation. The nature scenes are so realistic. I feel like they're taking great care to make it look beautiful.

Well the obvious choices are the Hayao Miyazaki films like Spirited Away, Howl's Moving Castle... etc but the director of Your Name has done another highly regarded film called "5 Centimenters per Second".

Asian dramas have a specific feel probably reminiscent of old American films from the forties and fifties... they are more sweet and innocent (or corny) depending on your taste. If you've seen a lot of these shows both live action or anime tv series then they begin to lose their effect. However, if you take a break... watch some American and European shows for awhile and then come back to them... they begin to feel fresh again.

I think another film called "Wolf Children" is another anime on my To Watch list... I'll post on that when I finally watch it.

I was amazed how everything was 3D, some things were clearly in front of the others, no special glasses needed. I have no idea how something like that is done and it blows my mind.

I watched this two days ago without knowing anything about it other than it was really popular in Japan and China. The animation is truly breathtaking. This was such an unexpectedly good film and I now understand why it was such a hit with both audiences and critics. The version I watched was in Japanese with English subtitles, so I had keep rewinding after reading in order to soak in the amazing visuals.
