Spoilers! Spoilers, everywhere!

I'll give you a brief rundown, having just watched this;

Spoilers!

1. This movie runs like two shorter films side by side, with not much coinciding until the final 30 minutes.

2. It's a return to slow building dread and tension.

3. Toshio gets laughs in Japan instead of the shrieks that Sadako and Kayako bring.

4. The videotape changed! It's some sort of long corridor/factory area now. No well.

5. It's hard to say who wins the fight. It looks like Sadako gets the upper hand except....

6. They meld to create one new abomination

7. All humans die

Any questions, let me know!

4.

Thanks for the heads up.

How do Sadako and Kayako actually fight? Sadako made Kayako's head explode in the trailers?

reply

Sadako's eye has some sort of ability to launch psychic powers which she used it to melt Kayako. This was shown a little in the trailer. However, Kayako is immortal and she respawned within a matter of seconds.

It seemed like the both of them gave up fighting each other and decided to merge their powers together in the end.

So to answer your question... They don't really square off in combat against each other but get frustrated that each of them are trying to kill the two main girls in the house. Sadako wants the kill because her tape cursed the girls and Kayako wants the kill because they are in her cursed home. Then throw in the whole ... evil tape being played in the house... I guess that links them in some way.

They don't throw punches or anything like that, more like, they just drag each other away. It acts as more of a jump scare/creep fest compilation than a combat scene but I still really enjoyed it. If you have seen both sets of movies before, it is just a homage/amalgamation of all the things you have seen them do in their previous movies... but against each other.

Well, they only have the one final scene 'together' technically which goes a little something like this;

SPOILERS.

The female main characters (two girls) go into the house to show Kayako/Toshio to the tape so that Sadako will attempt to kill them, hopefully leaving the main characters free of the curse. They are being fed information by mobile phone by the other main characters (a young man and blind child outside the house)

The girls play the tape inside of the house. Toshio appears and as he is about to grab one of the main characters, Sadako's tape finishes and she comes from the TV and drags Toshio away.

Kayako forms somewhere off screen and dashes from the shadows, dragging Sadako away.

Kayako is approaching the girls and when she is about to grab them, Sadako traps her with hair, from off screen. It is at this point that Sadako's hair fills Kayako's mouth and eye sockets causing her to explode.

So Sadako wins, right?

Not quite.

Then, as the main characters try to leave the house (they have been joined by the young man at this point), Sadako's hair comes again from the distance and wraps around the the young man's leg. He has some kind of Buddhist power that allows him to sever/remove evil with the use of hand gestures. He is pretty spiritual, I guess. He slices the hair.

The main characters gather outside the house next to a well that they have created as some form of trap for both of the spirits. However, they realise they need someone to be bait to get them into the well.

One of the main girls volunteers and jumps in as both Sadako and Kayako dash at each other. It's then when they form some kind of mutant...Lovecraftian... octopus demon thing and retreat down into the well, forever to be trapped with the girl that made the sacrifice.

But what kind of horror ending would that be?

There is an explosion that cuts the young man in half and leaves the blind girl screaming in terror. The well's seal is destroyed. Sadako and Kayako have fused to become sort sort of ... Kayako-like moving version of Sadako. She looks like Sadako but sounds and moves like Kayako. Toshio returns, sat behind all of this unfolding and it is then you realise the whole trap was for nothing.

We get a view of the blind girl's 'mind vision' and a huge swirling black mass of evil comes out of the well.

End.

Then after the credits, the film shows us the 'tape' again but this time with the updated version of Sakado, sounding like Kayako. Spooky!
