Wow, this got ridiculous

This show turned into some horrific parody. I've never seen a show turn to shit so quickly. It became the equivalent of a daytime soap opera. The only thing missing was the brain transplant story. All other idiotic story lines were hit upon....

What could have saved this show, in my opinion, would have been to have the international space station blown up by hackers or the next villain. The ridiculous office romance crap, the frog naming, plots that go nowhere...I’m not upset this show got cancelled. Hannah Wells was bad ass though.

Interesting. For me it was ok. I thought West wing had much much much more mundane stuff that didn't interest me (frog naming thing would take 3x as much screentime on west wing i think), while i thought Designated survivor had fast-paced coherent single episode plots and interesting longer term plots (hannah fbi stuff eg).

I gave up near the end of season 1 when it went from being this guy being thrust into the role of President to well.....here's Kiefer as the President and gosh, he seems to always be right.

That got old quick.

It’s like the writers just stopped trying

What started as an intriguing and somewhat disturbing political mystery show has now devolved into SJW nonsense. Now it's mission is to show to the world explicitly that gay black men find sodomy very refreshing. Then we've got the Hispanic VP candidate who lied to his cranky girlfriend about precisely when he changed his last name to something more generic and whitey sounding. And let's not forget the politically powerful women who seem to confuse unpleasant cantankerousness with self-assertion. The entire show is now filled with lame, unsubtle social messages and almost exclusively Democratic Party talking points in Independent Party drag disguise.

It is not the SJW stuff that ruined this show ... and sane President of the people would pursue an agenda to get corporations and the rich to pay their taxes. The plot and the writing were the problem, and the realism ... clearly no one really knew how to write for this show. The whole sub-plot about the very rich guy who blew up the capitol building was lame.

"The whole sub-plot about the very rich guy who blew up the capitol building was lame."

It was, but the plot of blowing up the capitol building wasn't the lame part of it. The lame part was the gutless choice to make the terrorists homegrown Americans, something we've seen countless times in film and tv since 9/11. We don't want to offend all the Islamic terrorists out there now do we? This signaled the onslaught of PC trash that was to come in seasons 2 and 3.

It is just one way out of many to go with the story. I don't think you get how stories are laid out and why different characters are created the way they are. The most obvious is that some characters are male and some are female - for a reason. Two switch them around doesn't work or has less impact. To make the terrorists middle Eastern Terrorists these days is cliche, and also pushes the buttons of a lot of people on both sides. You right-wingers always have to go for the cheap shot on political correctness. I just cannot see that as the universal big hot-button issue of the day ... it is a cheap shot to attack anything you can because you can always frame anything as politically correct in some way.

(Spoilers) These things were so ham fisted in S3. I support social justice causes but they weren't even trying for subtlety. The transgender plot was so cookie cutter. They really should have done a Hanah Wells series instead of what we got. By the way Hannah went out horribly.

I haven't watched the new season but I don't doubt things are getting weird. The premise of this was a good one and asked "What if". What it needed was good writers

I agree ... the first few episodes were interesting from just the premise of the show, then it got silly. I wonder what would really happen in a case like this? I am not sure the country would stand a lower level official taking over in a major crisis, in fact today I am not sure the country would even survive it.
