Drowned in its own filler.

Holden’s panic attacks were dropped, his potential sociopathy was dropped, Bill’s kid’s budding sociopathy was a fascinating predicament that never got properly explored - all because this show was seemingly obsessed with pointless filler that didn’t go anywhere (like Holden’s gf - how much time did that eat up? Or Wendy’s mysterious cat - why did you show me that?)

There was so much good about this series and I wish it hadn’t been effectively cancelled, but it’s hard to defend a show that lacked narrative focus, wasted my time with tedious filler and routinely dropped exciting story threads.

It smells like a show made by a committee pulling in different directions, surely Fincher had enough clout to slam his fist on the writers table and get some focus 🤷🏻‍♂️

Yeah I feel the same. There was probably a reason for it, but I couldn't figure it out. The storyline with his girlfriend was super boring.

I guess they wanted to show Holden becoming like his psychopath interview subjects - becoming detached, sexually dysfunctional and developing fetishes. But just as that was getting interesting it detracted from the premise of the show - which was about interviewing real serial killers - so they abort that thread, have him ditch her and it’s over.

The trouble is, this isn’t a documentary or an episodic TV show - it’s a 13 episode decent budget series with David Fincher at the helm, that means it needs to be a character-driven story.

Instead of a single baby you get two abortions.
