Bad Things About the Show

First of all, producers are ignoring the other characters while they are talking about one specific character. I mean, in season 1 Eva was emotional, deep and lovely etc. But in season 2 and 3 they ignored her, and describe her to us as a drunk sarcastic bitch. Another example, in season 2 Noora was so complicated her feelings, her thoughts... We watched Noora and William's love for 12 episodes. But then at the beginning of season 3 they suddenly broke up and producers didn't even bother themselves to talk about it. I'm feeling bad because they'll do the same to Isak and Even in season 4 too. We'll probably forget about them. So please show us the other characters too don't show us only one!

but that is the point of the show .. every season focuses only on one character mainly

I know but producers are ignoring everybody else while they are talking about one specific character their relationships can be over but just because someone else is the main character, they are going to show Eva as a bitch til the end of the show, they are going to show Noora as a stupid lover til the end of the show, we probably won't see Isak again in the show just because it's not his season.

I kind of understand where you are coming from and I too am slightly concerned that we won't get much (if any) further character development from those characters that have already had a season dedicated to them. To make matters worst, they introduce drama and then never (at least not yet) elaborate as to what really happened, like noora/william and eva/chris. Still, with that aside, I really enjoy the shows approach to focusing on one main character a season.

reply

no offence but Noora and William are in their teens, of course, their relationship won´t last forever even if they were to get married hey probably would get divorced.

And as Isak said in the final episode "minutt for minutt" they just enjoy it while they have it.

reply

You are right about relationships but they are literally destroying the characters, I just wanted to say that i want to see Eva as a emotional person like she was before. I don't want to see her as a drunk bitch but producers will probably show her to us like that til the end of the show because it's not her season anymore.

I completely agree with you. I really liked Eva in season 1 and I'm in the middle of season 2 right now and she has become so ditzy. It's like she doesn't have the same depth anymore or a serious side.

When your mind breaks the spirit of your soul.

as someone has already said, the thing you consider a bad thing is an actual format of the show, so i don't know what to tell you.

who says eva isn't 'emotional, deep and lovely' anymore? she's still the same person as ever, we just don't follow her life anymore. she's not 'a drunk bitch', she's just having fun, she's young. we know she's in a relationship with chris and that they're happy, and that's more than enough for a background character.

thomas quit and storyline between noora and william had to change. i think the show handled it pretty well; they didn't break up (at least for now), they just live in different countries. noora is not 'a stupid lover', she's a teenager! william is her first serious boyfriend, of course she will be upset and sad he let her feel alone in london/let her go back to oslo.

if we don't see isak and even till the end of the show that's fine (though i'm certain that won't happen), their (love) story was the focus of this season and we need to move on to other characters and learn more about them.

i love one character per season format very much, no other show (i've watched at least) has done that and i'm enjoying the change.

what do people expect from teenagers? they are not role models, they are young people who make mistakes and hopefully learn from them.

reply

Actually, you are right but I just don't want to say goodbye to them. You are right about everything, I was trying to say that it would be a good idea to make couple of episodes about characters instead of making a whole season about them. Wouldn't it be better? Like they can make season 20 episodes; 4 episodes for each character: Eva, Noora, Isak, Sana, Vilde. As I understand, creating a whole new concept around a character in every season is your favorite point about the show. Yes I like that too, I just want to see other characters again.

reply

i agree it would be nice seeing them more often but there's a one problem: everyone from the core cast is 16/17 yo (well, minus josefine - noora, who's 20) and they still go to school. if this was an american show 20 or more episodes per season would be doable because 'teens' are played by twenty or older actors, but here that's not the case. i know you said '4 episodes per character' but that means all of them would have to be available all the time and that's a lot for someone who goes to school and is trying to focus on grades to get into universities of their choice. also, josefine and tarjei knew from the start their seasons would be s2/s3 and they could plan their life beforehand.

what i'm trying to say is that this is not their job, their job is school :)

this is of course just my opinions, i'm not trying to lecture anybody which i've been accused of on this board.

reply

Actually only Tarjei(Isak) and David(Magnus) are the same age as their characters, the rest are mostly 19/20 and not in school anymore. :)

When I watched season 3 the first time, I was very disappointed that the girl group I've grown to love was completely ignored. But after watching all three seasons a few times, it makes perfect sense.
In fact this is the essence of what Skam is. As you know, every season centers around a different character and we see and feel the same as they do, quite literally.
Some examples:
In season 1, we are introduced to Noora through the eyes of Eva, and at this point, all we know about Noora is, that she is this mysterious cool and stylish chick, who has lived in Madrid, has a lot of opinions and isn't afraid to stand up for herself or her friends. We don't learn much about her, because this is how Eva sees her and hence how we as viewers see her.
However, this all changes when "we" are Noora in season 2. We learn a whole lot more about her and see a very vulnerable and a slightly unsecure girl (at least when it comes to boys).

In season 2 we also learn that Vilde is struggling with an eating disorder, and because Noora herself has suffered from an eating disorder at some point, she is the only one who actually notices and confronts Vilde about it. Vilde might've struggled with this for some time, but we don't see this in season 1, because Eva probably doesn't see this. None of the other girls appear to notice in season 2 either, only Noora, because we know she has struggled as well.
In season 2 we also learn that Sana actually does have a soft side, as her and Noora share a tender moment talking about the struggle to deal with William and his actions. This is perhaps the first time we see Sana "break character".

Same goes for season 3. We are seeing everything from Isak's perspective, and this means that the girl group is practically nonexistent, because we know that Isak isn't a part of this group and he isn't as close with them as Eva or Noora, so through the eyes of Isak, the girl group is not interesting. Instead we are introduced to another group, as you know.

When Isak is battling with his feelings for Even, Noora is portrayed as a bit annoying, constantly talking about her break up with William, and as Isak himself is struggling, he's fed up with this. Hence making it seem like we don't care about Noora and William at all because Isak doesn't care as much.

I personally think that this is a very clever way to write a show and it adds a unique experience overall. We get a few hints every season about some of the characters, but we have no way of knowing the whole story before we experience them first hand as the character. Like when it was hinted through season 1 and 2 that Isak might be gay, but this, again, is seen from another perspective, and we don't know the full story until it's told through Isak. So who knows what will be brought to the show next? We'll see!
