Checking the american passports

When they were looking for american citizens why didn't the terrorists send one of their men to check the passports of all the people in the flight. They had all of them in one section. Instead they ask the crew to go and collect all the passports and they had to check all of them. I don't think that really happened. It must have been the writers imagination.
