all the men seemed gay

All the men seemed gay and more than willing to have sex with their authority figure.

Om Mani Padme Hum

I think when he raped them it made them gay...

When he started the cult it was the mid-80s, the height of the AIDS epidemic and a time when being gay was still highly stigmatized. I think he specifically chose to bring in people who were either knowingly gay or extremely sexually confused. They'd also be more primed for manipulation as they felt so far outside of regular society.

Wondering why he picked so many women though? Was it just to distract from his homosexuality? Telling everyone not to have sex (while wanting all the men for himself) then filling the cult with beautiful women seemed weird.

reply

Sex wasnt his motivation. he didnt care if he had sex with those men, the narrator clearly says so.

His motivation was to be a living god among deluded true believers who took care of his every need and worshiped him. The sex was just his birthright as their god. So although his Manson-like ego crimes include sexual manipulation they go far beyond the scope of that alone. This is what you meant to say, right?

Even if sex was not his primary or only motivation it doesn't follow that "didn't care if he had sex with those men". Of course he wanted the sex! The guy was criminally deluded in any number of ways.

Just pulling in men would have been transparent and self-defeating, anyway, he wanted more than sex, he wanted a community of worshipers, a balanced family, of followers.

Targeting 'beautiful' but directionless people was very smart. Attractive people feel special and entitled - 'if he chose me it was because I am special, this is how I, of all people, have been blessed to join such an elite cadre of seekers following the true prophet'.
