shareTotally agree. In the video it looked like an iphone (and he later referred to apple) and it does not take that long to turn one off. Even if he didn't know how to turn the phone off, which I find hard to believe, he could just have asked. I also don't understand how they couldn't recover the video. The sheriff's attitude towards those girls and females in general was disgraceful and I choked on my coffee when he was praising the boys for moving on with their lives while insinuating that there was something wrong with the girls for not. I feel sorry for his daughters' if that is his attitude.
shareI got the impression he intentionally let him delete it. Immediately after he tells him he needs to confiscate the phone because of the video, he hands the phone back to him and lets him press a bunch of buttons?? Why even turn the power off? Why not just ask how to turn the power off? Why not look over his shoulder if you're going to let him turn it off himself? Why let him take so long? So obvious what was going on there. Plus it sounds like the video was all over school so surely someone else had a copy somewhere. It's probably still out there.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but that was a detective interrogating the suspect(s), not the Sheriff.
Yes, the casual good ol' boy approach is to make a suspect comfortable and get them to open up: "Yeah, sure, it ain't no thang...you can tell me." You may know it better as "Good Cop." The technique is rather common.
Though that doesn't explain allowing the kid to have the phone after saying it's evidence.

That's exactly what we were witnessing in the CCTV feed. The officer was giving the boy a hint to delete the video before they confiscated it for evidence. Then later the sheriff said no video was found on the phone. The documentary filmmakers couldn't outright say this is what happened, because that would be libelous, so they let the CCTV recording speak for itself. Shameful good ol' boy network protecting their jock offspring. I wonder: if Sheriff Darren White's two teen daughters ever get raped, would he still have the same indifferent attitude? maybe karma will catch up to him and his family...
