Robot football (Robo 8 creator)

Did anyone get the impression that Mr. Herzog was slightly appalled at how passionate this guy was when talking about his robot and how he hopes that by 2050 they will be smart enough to beat a professional soccer team? In one instant you can clearly see just how moved this guy was by his work, nearly in tears, and it seems Werner noticed it and possibly felt disgusted by how moved he was over an artificial being.

Very interesting to note.

I felt basically the opposite. Herzog told him his robot was "beautiful", and Herzog is not one for irony. I thought it was a tender moment.

reply

Fascinating how interpretations can differ.

reply

Yes, and I'd be interesting in hearing others' interpretations as well.

The documentary wonders whether humans will evolve to the point that they don't need human interaction; will our relationship with technology will be enough? And that is the question that I think Herzog is earnestly trying to address when he asks that guy whether he "loves" his robot. In a technological future, many people will be left behind, but that guy is the type of person who will thrive--one who can legitimately have love for non-human, artificial...things--intelligence, whatever. Robots.

I might be wrong though.

That guy was the most geekiest person I have ever seen on film

I bet he gets more tail than you.

reply

But it might be robot tail.

reply

Still better than what you're getting.

reply

It was the guys creation. Of course he loved it. I'd watch a game of that kind of soccer, and I don't say that about much soccer. But it shows how the development of robots is coming a long way, in varied fields of endeavor. We all wanted a flying car, but did we think we'd ever get one that drove?
So no, I didn't think Herzog was appalled. Perhaps he realizes that to be that creative, one must be so passionate as to border on obsessiveness.

reply

Great input. I didn't consider it like that.

reply

I really didn't get that impression- i always felt he liked pasisonate people, and this way was great! Maybe i'm affected by my own liking of him, and the football looked very very good too, really well programmed.

The football segment was great, and what was a little crazier than how much he loved "Robo 8" was that after he explained the robot's four green and one blue dot I found myself liking that one robot more too. Must be some human empathy thing or something. Crazy.
