Pretty good for a Viettnamese comedy, right?

I thought it was surprisingly good based on my experience with other Vietnamese movies. Most Vietnamese movies, even comedies, are overly melodramatic and contain too many "coincidences" that allow the plot to continue. I feel this movie managed to move along without too many of those - the only one I felt out of place was the accident at the end. Once they mentioned that he rushed out to grab the hat, I knew he was going to get hit and that was the plot device that would make Nga use her blood. But given that Nga truly developed through her experience, it would have been more powerful if Nga give up her youth through her own choice, not because her grandson was dying (it's presented as a choice, but really?)

Some key pluses for the movie:
This was also a movie for the whole family. It was good to see the theater full of people of all ages. Most other Vietnamese movies seem targeted to teens exclusively.

I like the characters and their development. They were able to follow and develop a good number of main characters, leaving just two to be complete caricatures lacking any sort of development (the daughter of the old guy and the younger sister of the band leader).

The humor hit the right spots. As a foreigner living in Vietnam, Nga's portrayal of "old people's behavior" was very enlightening for me. The Vietnamese audience found it hilarious, which should be a testament to its realism. Even though it reflects Vietnamese culture, I would still say most of the humor was universal. The movie only relied on a few instances of humor only Vietnamese would laugh at (such as the daughter pulling the pants off the old guy - something that in America would only be funny for 5 year olds; the American equivalent is fart jokes).

Congratulations to Phan Gia Nhat Linh on a very well made film! Look forward to seeing more films like this.
