The writer/director talks about how he brought his personal experience and the Korean-American experience into this story of a young man finding his own identity, as well as filming in a working spa and how he shoots the body to portray the lead character's fractured psyche:

Thanks for posting that. Having been to all of the Korean Spas in Los Angeles, I could tell they were using the locker room from one spa, and steam room from another spa, the golf course at another spa and pretending like it was the same spa. And the front desk was totally a set.
