Female Nurse Needed In Room?

The mother said there was supposed to be a female nurse in the room while the Dr. changed her bandage. I have never heard of such a thing. Doctors see women completely undressed at times as far as I know with no female nurse in the room.

There is definitely supposed to be a female nurse there for a pap or the breast exam. I am not sure that this would have been questionable since there were no private parts exposed except that I don't think the Dr would be changing a bandage.

reply

I have always wanted a female as my primary care doctor because I would feel uncomfortable with a male doing a pap or breast exam. But I remember 10 years ago when I had a collapsed lung, when they had to change the tube to a bigger one, a male doctor did the operation, but there was a female nurse with me (mainly to hold my hand because that hurt like hell!!)

Doctors will routinely have a nurse or equivalent in the room with them when seeing an opposite-sex patient, or any pt with whom they may feel terrible need for a witness. This isn't for the pt's protection, it's for the physician's; many, many looney or super-litigious people have claimed that a doctor said or did something inappropriate when no such thing happened.

reply

Any respectable doctor will have a female nurse present if the patient is to be examined in a sensitive area. Without a nurse present a patient could allege rape or other inappropriate behavior. This protects both the patient and doctor.

reply

I'm not sure where you live but as far as I know at least in my state during any type of exam it is required by law for a nurse to be present. This is for the safety of the patient and the doctor.

I had a pap smear done by a male OBGYN. No female was present.

My former OBGYN was a man, and he always had a nurse present--although he might not have when my husband came to my OB appts with me, now that I think of it, but that's because my husband was there. Sigh, I adored him (in a non-sexual way, I mean; he was just a wonderful doctor and man, and he delivered my two children). If we hadn't left South FL I'd still be seeing him. I haven't found another doctor I liked as much.

My OBs have always been men, and there's always been a nurse present when I'm examined. They always have a button on the wall they'll push to bring the nurse in.

The one who delivered my baby did examine me while I was pregnant without a nurse, but as soon as the baby was here, when I went back for my regular Pap smear, he called the nurse back in. I joked that if I trusted him with a scalpel (C-section), I trusted him with everything else.
