Does it mention ...

... old Slavic religion, Rodnovery or Starovery? Some say it's the oldest organised religion in the world, I don't know about that, but it's influences over Europe, and in particular Norse religion are immense. However it's customary in popular culture, that anything that is Slavic is shunned w/o thinking.

So I guess I'm wondering if this is any better, or if it's typical slavophobic hogwash?

I'm disappointed in this series. I had hoped for a wider scope, but it seems to be focused mostly on the Abrahamic religions (Judaism, Christianity, Islam), some Buddhism and Hindu, a very brief mentioning of Sikhism, and some early North and South American religions. Most other beliefs are barely mentioned.

I had also hoped for a more critical view of religion as well, and belief in a "god" as it relates to the culture and era from which it grew from peoples who had little knowledge of science and physics. This is not the case. As an atheist, I'd hoped to be able to watch this series with my kids, so they could get a further understanding of why humans chose to create gods and the various images they chose to form these gods -- from the more human like gods of the Greeks to the celestial and omniscient gods of monotheist religions, but the criticism and historical context is definitely lacking.

We've also been watching the "Lost Gods" series, which has more historical and cultural context. I've decided not to continue with the Freeman series, sadly. In our house, we discuss many different gods and why the cultures created them as answers to problems and questions in their world. My particular interest is in old Celtic, British and Scandinavian gods, of which I"ve seen slim to no mention.

Your expectations are too high.

Freeman is not exploring religions. He is exploring concepts associated with God(s) in the various religions, such as afterlife, creation, apocalypse, evil, miracles, and heaven and hell. Given a choice, he would explore the familiar concepts with familiar religions.

I would like to see him venture into paganism and its Gaia-themed concepts.
