"out of range" cliche

So, this series takes place in a universe, where they can travel across space, have all kind of modern gadgets, but they still can't have some kind of radio transmitter that can't transmit further than a kilometer? I'm so tired of seeing this cliche in movies and shows where this keeps popping up.
