quite enjoyable

You have got to know what you are getting into when you decide to watch a Hallmark Romance. You have to embrace the cliches, the predictable plots, the sometimes weird casting, the annoying background music, the product placement, etc etc. Otherwise, you embarrass yourself by going on message boards proclaiming stuff like "This is the worst movie in the history of filmdom!" "Everyone involved in this movie should be shot at dawn!" or, (huffing and puffing)"This wasn't anything Like Pride and Prejudice!" Please. You have to have a sliding scale. I gave it an 7. The cast was great, the two leads were charming and had a lot of chemistry. I loved that it just had a hint of P&P, changing the names, conflating characters, substituting more modern situations, etc. I took it as a sign of respect to Austen's Great Work (world's greatest fan, here!). Saying in essence, "We know we can't come close to Jane Austen, so we don't want to insult her or her admirers by pretending to." It had a riveting start with sweet, naive, but incorruptible Elizabeth being strong armed and bribed to give a star athlete a passing grade. When she refuses, she is fired. What a beginning! Injustice, an evil villain, a set up that had me anticipating lots of lovely revenge and comeuppance and good triumphing over evil. Unfortunately that part was something of an anticlimax. Things did work out for her(of course), but it would have been a lot better if they had concentrated on that sub-plot. However, thanks to the leads, the romance was sweet and I enjoyed it for that alone.

Yesterday I found out that this Hallmark movie was based on a novel. No, I do not mean P&P but on a book called Unleashing Mr. Darcy - see http://www.goodreads.com/book/show/18006093-unleashing-mr-darcy.

Of course that book is essentially a rewrite of P&P. The Unleashing Mr. Darcy novel is nothing compared to the orginal P&P but is better than the movie. The script of the movie is basically a simplification of the novel. If you enjoyed the movie and like P&P reworks then it is probably worth your time to read the novel too. It is an easy read of a few hours.

The movie's quite fun to watch... especially when NOT accociated so much with Austen's P&P. I find this movie quite entertaining, similar yet different. Lead male is charming off the charts, and lead female's constant "angry" appearance gave a different sense of beauty and sharpness. The interactions between the two were fun to observe: most memorable line was Darcy's "...Are you always this hostile?" First time he met Liz in New York. Paevey's Darcy feels better than 2005 movie version: No long face or constant moody looks - tuning up the comedy element was awesome.
Aunt Violet stole the entire show! Frances Fisher really excels exceptionally at playing roles of arrogant aristocrats. Really missed her after Ruth Bukater in Titanic.

Some nods to Austen's novel, but contemporary setting gives this a nice new touch:
- Liz's mother not that hurry to marry Liz off,
- privileged students' parents attempts to bribe the teachers for passing grades(that happens),
- dog show instead of old-fashioned dance,
- the spunky sister(Zara's totally fun),
- the Darcy's Estate appeared at 70% marker of the movie to make Donovan more down-to-earth,
- jerk elder sister with(surprisingly) honorable and nice little brother
- tennis match,
- Markam's poetic justice.

Also, the fast-paced guitar & piano music is enjoyable to listen as well. Wish I can have that on loop.

Leads got chemistry, sure. Not sure if it's that easy to detect by regular standards... easier to detect on opposite side: sparks can, apparently, also fly when two blades clash. LOL
