How many jerks can you fit in one movie? (Spoilers obviously)

I would use stronger language, because "jerk" is an understatement, but I don't want to break the IMDB rules.

The parent and student at the beginning were jerks for obvious reasons, as were Felicity and Darcy's Aunt, Rose, was it?

Liz's sister and Gabrielle, and Darcy's sister were all jerks for pushing Liz towards Darcy when it almost got her in trouble several times.

Then towards, Liz was also a jerk. She knew she had feelings for Darcy, and she was denying it and trash talking him any chance she had. So it was a quite a bit hypocritical of her get so angry with him when he did the same thing. She knew darn well he liked her, and that he was probably playing coy, she just seemed to be looking for reasons to hate him at that point. And Liz's sister was a jerk at that point too, for storming out on her boyfriend because of what she overheard, only to go back to defending Darcy almost immediately after.

Darcy was really the only one who wasn't a huge jerk, except for maybe a few minutes in the very beginning, and he quickly apologized.

Have you seen or read Pride and Prejudice? Elizabeth Bennett acts the same way as Elizabeth Scott. This is based on it.

reply

This was nothing like the true Pride and Prejudice? This was painful to watch.

reply

Agreed. In P and P, Mr. Darcy was indeed arrogant and snobbish at the beginning, giving Elizabeth a good reason to dislike him. In this movie, she instantly takes offense at him for practically no reason, and keeps on and on about it, making it painful to watch. She is the one who is rude and pigheaded. I can't imagine why he would like her after the way she treats him.
The acting was good, otherwise.

reply

It was kind of hard to like her. She didn't treat him very well throughout the movie.

reply

Elizabeth needed a fresh one to straighten her out. Terrible movie/adaptation.

The reason she takes a sudden intense dislike for him is that she felt a sudden deep-seated feeling for him and she
a) didn't like feeling like that
b) didn't know how to handle it
c) didn't even recognize it for what it was.

The above can be witnessed by her slight smiles and twinkle in her eyes whenever she turns away from him.

The cast was too large to properly develop the characters. They used flat stereotypes such as the snobby wealthy woman.

His sister and her mother weren't needed. Her sister and her friend could have been one character instead.

I happened to find those jerks quite entertaining.

There's a new formula I listed in my TV movie table sheet alongside "Jealous Ex-boyfriend & girlfriend", "Ended with a kiss/engagement/marriage/newborn...", "Confrontational fallout", "Confession"... and it's called "Combustible couple". Reason's simple; the couple ended in romance, sure, but started out not like the usual "love at first sight" or "meet & greet" type, but started out in deep distaste and hostility and only warmed up afterwards - that still counts as "have chemistry", but in a more combustible type... LOL.

So far I counted this movie and Best Christmas Party Ever got combustible couples, All of My Heart was slightly lighter, and Bound & Babysitting's got Combustible 5.0(Sursok and Van Winkle's characters seemed ready to clash knives XDD).

So yeah... these jerks, sure. But they provided very nice entertainment. Nice story anyways.

Agree with OP.

Apart from the defined jerk characters, I found Gabrielle very annoying. She kept pushing Lizzie and Darcy together for no apparent reason. And the sister Jenna! One moment she over hears half info and practically ruins the budding love story. And lo and behold! in the next scene, she is again pushing Lizzie for Darcy.
