Last people before the internet?

What did Noel mean by this? He said it's no coincidence that they were the last group of people to form before the internet? It's said towards the end of the film before they're going to perform live at the gig.

The world has changed since the growth of the internet. Everyone is a critic, culture is diluted, everyone recording sh*t on their phones to chase their own five minutes of fame, nobody lives in the moment anymore.

It's all x factor and Justin fu**ing Beiber. It's not about the music anymore, the brotherhood. It's about marketing, celebrity, fu**ing retweets.

You'll never get a band as monumentally big as Oasis anymore as a result. That was his point.

there will never be a band like oasis again. its all x factor and youtube. everything is shared over facebook and twitter. you had to go to the gig, or buy the cd to be involved in oasis. and it was so much sweeter than todays music.
im 25 so i never experienced oasis in there prime but i can watch this documentary and see live footage of them and literally melt in jealousy of that era. i turn the tv on now and see people on x factor being hailed as the greatest singers. makes me feel sick to be in this culture of music.

Ah okay. But why does he choose the word coincidence? Why would it be a coincidence that they were the last big rock band before the internet age? What's it a coincidence to?

reply

Because they were *beep* amazing! Stop overthinking shít.
No one cares about the artist on the stage anymore. It's all about getting video evidence to show off to your friends and *beep* twitter followers

It's a turn of phrase that can also be taken to mean "it's no surprise".

Look at the photos of the crowd at their gigs. Everyone there just to go mental and have a good time. Not a single person just standing there filming it on their phone.
