Turns down $5k...but okay with ripping off strangers?

The two protagonists are hardly sympathetic. Ezra's mother presents him with a $5000 no strings attached yet he declines the offer in a grand gesture, declaring he leans on his parents too much. Ezra is pissed off that Maddie took him to the cleaners, yet he is perfectly fine with ripping off strangers in his quest for vengeance. Doesn't add up.

yeah... I was about to say the same. the protagonist just doesnot do rational choices. i think the writers just dont now how to create conflict so they are making the protagonist dumb and irrational.
