Small smartphones and selfies in 2005?

The two lead characters shoot a selfie with the snowman in what we presume is 2005, since they were in college 10 years before the rest of the movie, which I assume takes place in 2015. I don't remember there being many if any smart phones in 2005, and if there were they were very expensive. Why would a poor college student have a smart phone Then? Most of us had flip phones and maybe a palm pilot as a separate device back then. Not a tiny smart phone. If I remember correctly, the smart phone in the scene is about the size of an iPhone 5. Oops.

It was a flip phone. I remember because they didn't make clear that the first scenes were in the past, 10 years ago. I thought it was weird that she had a flip phone in 2015. Now whether phones back then were set up for doing selfies is another question.

I thought the same thing when watching that scene. What got me thinking also was that it had a front facing camera which I doubted was available in 2005. So being as obsessive as I am, I did some research on smart phones back then and the closest I found was the Blackberry 7100v. Looks similar to what you can see in the movie but it didn't even have a camera let alone a front facing one for selfies. I'm guessing they took a little creative license there. Here is a picture of the 7100v.

In 2005 the Nokia N90 hit the market. Symbian OS smartphone with a 2MP camera.

Watch the opening scene in the college radio station. You'll clearly see that she is using a Motorola Razr V3 in that scene. Now look at the scene where she takes the selfie and if you look closely you can see that it is also a V3. The V3 was released in 2004 and is one of the most popular cell phones ever produced and it does have a camera. I still use them to this day as their ability to get a connection and long battery life between charges is way beyond any so called smart phone ever made.

If a man speaks in the forest and no woman is there to hear it is he still wrong?
