Ice Skating - Confusion

First of all, at the photo shoot, leading lady tells terrible supporting actor friend, "I'm so glad you could make it!", then when he invites them ice skating he gets criticized for not letting them know he was coming. Huh? Then, in the next few minutes:

"I thought you loved ice skating!" - the assistant (aka one of FIVE overused plot device characters used to spread sage advice and wise wisdom to the leading lady right when she needs it!)

"I haven't been ice skating in, like, 15 years." - leading lady to assistant, after agreeing to go skating with the world's *worst* actor/character... another advice-giving in-your-face plot device (also with his wife and 3 kids that she has never met)

"I see why you love this tradition!" - leading man says to leading lady as she struggles not to fall on the ice (supposed to be charming that she is clumsy I suppose?). How busy is her life that she hasn't done one of her favorite Christmas activities in 15 years, when she's sooooo alllllll about Christmas? He's only been gone seven years, so it's not like ice skating reminded her of him or something ridiculous like that.

Agreed. This one was bad. I usually love these holiday movies enough to suspend belief on a lot of things. Not this time.
