Dates?

The first episode opened in 1905, the caption told us. The next caption told us it was two years later but we seemed to have jumped forward all the way to 1914. Did I miss another caption or was it just a monumental cock-up by the programme makers?

As soon as he was discharged, he walks to the museum and encounters Arthur who gives him a drink at the bar, and tells him there hasn't been ice since 1915.... Even though the war started July 28, 1914... it's all of a sudden post-1915, how many steps walking does it take for a day to go by? 1/4?

The dates are really messed up, is 1 day the equivalent of 5 years? Carter is called to service as World War I has just ignited and leaves instantly to Cairo, he arrives for duty and is discharged from the army for being too much of a weirdo in the eyes of the British, all in one day, then all of a sudden the war ends, so it has to be 1918 already. Did it actually take him 5 years to travel from the excavation to Cairo? that war ended rather quickly, not even a day went by and it finished before it even began. This series is rushed terribly.

Carter would not have been called to service in 1914 (unless he was in the T.A reserve) as the British Army was an all volunteer organisation and remained so until 1916 by which time Carter would have been 42 and too old to serve in combat.
