A rare misfire


Asghar Farhadi, the Iranian modern master of the melodramatic, generally creates a cacophony and slowly pulls out the grace notes within. In About Elly, he hits singular beats within an overwhelming strategy; in A Separation he yanks distinct catastrophes together and uncovers their parallels and distinctions. Since 2013’s The Past, the US has been granted windows into his earlier career while waiting for a genuinely new effort. I respectfully disagree. My husband and I are huge fans of this director, and we saw "The Salesman" yesterday. It blew us away; we couldn't stop talking about it.
