Anyone else think Johnny is a bit of a Gary Stu? http://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/Main/MartyStu

He's heroic, he's brave, he's polite, he's intelligent, he's good-looking, he's a great fighter, he's rich, he's responsible, he's forgiving, he's empathetic. Women all love him, men want to be him or are irrationally angry with/jealous of him.

I cannot think of a single flaw this man has.

His brother was portrayed as a nice guy with a good head on his shoulders, as someone who understands the people who work for him and is generous with them.

Then it turns out Johnny is his brother and suddenly he's this irrational, bumbling idiot who doesn't understand his men and has no business sense.

He boned his brother's fiancee (now wife).
He ran away instead of facing the consequences with his brother and father.
He stayed away for years.
When he finally came back, after his father had died, he lied about who he was.

Meh. Seems to me that the show is being very sympathetic towards him about it and it wouldn't surprise me if the whole running away debacle was him being a martyr and trying to do the Right Thing.

Well of course they're being sympathetic about it towards him, he's the male lead. That doesn't mean I am required to believe he's flawless.

Maybe you don't, but I think that's how they've portrayed him. Edward Cullen isn't flawless, but the way he's portrayed it's clear that he is supposed to be flawless. That's the thing with Mary Sues and Gary Stus, even their flaws aren't really flaws because they're behaviours that are justified or down-played.
