I know every country had pretty much the same railroad building experience - corruption, whores etc etc etc...... but gee, HOW is still going. Was there a need to have this too?

Well apart from the rubbish Scripts and extremely lousy acting.
The History of the building of British rail system almost mirrored the Americans apart from we had no Indians which they call I the most part themselves or to be "PC" Native Americans to worry about or herds of Buffalo to slaughter to feed the labourers.
The history of both sides of the ponds railway or permeant way build is filled with hardship misery and mayhem.
Plus politics and corruption.
