One thing

that kinda puzzled me for a long time about StarTrek:

all, but ALL sentient being are human like. Vulcans, Klingons, Kelpiens, whatever.

all humanlike with maybe a tattoo here and there, maybe some minor differences in aspect but all humanoid 99%.

How come?

reply

Because actors are humanoid, lol.

I could be wrong about this, or it might have been retconned or ignored at some point, but I'm fairly certain in The Original Series somewhere they figure out - or at least strongly suspect - that the same ancestor some millions of years ago "seeded" the cosmos and the descendants of their various colonies, perhaps mixed with other aliens, lead to the humanoid populations of the galaxy.

Also budgets.

reply

No, they actually explored that further in a TNG episode.

reply

Okay, so it was a theory of Kirk and Co., but Picard et. al. disproved it?

reply

No, it was proven true. Episode was called "The Chase".

reply

Ah! I misread your post. That's on me. Thanks for clarifying, Moonglum9.

reply

Because we have to see their eyes and mouth to relate to them. Telepathic creature in a tank are right out!
I think that was a Roddenberry rule. Back is the day makeup was limited to skin coloring and bad hair, plus pointy ears for the star. Tellarites and some monsters got a rubber mask.

The Horta from TOS was sentient, and not close to humanoid. The Gorn had arms and legs but were reptilian. In Season Three, "Is There No Truth in Beauty" and "The Savage Curtain" both have very non-humanoid sentients. Star Trek Enterprise had the aquatic intelligent species. Next Gen started out with the "space jellyfish" which seemed intelligent.

Just off the top of my head.

reply

The Gorn is reptilian AND humanoid, like the Jem'Hadar and the Hirogen are.

reply

The ironic thing is that the actress who played the benevolent progenitor of the humanoid species in "The Chase" went on to play the malevolent anti-humanoid Changeling Founder in DS9.

reply

I wouldn't say the Founders were anti-humanoid. They simply wanted to control everything everywhere and felt they were superior beings. For all we know, they were right. LOL
