‘Star Trek: Discovery’ Producers Talk Finale’s Big Reveal And Hint At Season 2 Story https://trekmovie.com/2018/02/11/star-trek-discovery-producers-talk-finales-big-reveal-and-hint-at-season-2-story/

Season two will deal with spirituality and science, plus more Kelpiens

On After Trek, when the producers were asked if they could spoil anything for the second season, Harberts said:

I think one of the things we are really interested this year is the collision of science and spirituality. I think that is something moving from a war chapter. That’s something that excites us for this season.

And during a lighting round of questions, the producers were willing confirm season two will have more Kelpiens, more planets and more partying, but wouldn’t discuss if Prime Lorca survived in the Mirror Universe. Nor would they talk about who is set to be the captain of the USS Discovery.

Jason Isaacs performance was the best thing about season one, for me he made the show watchable.

Sonequa Martin-Green, Doug Jones, Anthony Rapp and Mary Wiseman are not going to keep me interested, nor are Kelpiens, a boring race of aliens if Saru is anything to go by.

Well - the success of season 2 really depends on who they'll have as the new captain, because none of the current characters are sophisticated/interesting enough to pull the show on their own. Basically, the new captain will be the new lead - so a lot really depends on that actor/character.

Season 2 won't start until 2019! (UPDATE: not confirmed)

This ET interview with Gretchen J. Berg and Aaron Harberts is a week old so parts of it are already in above articles.

ET: It's notable that it's Captain Pike who sent the distress signal for the Enterprise. Is he a character we could meet in season two, along with Enterprise crew members?

Harberts: The thing to consider about Captain Pike is, from an audience and writer's point of view, there is something very exciting about a key character from [Star Trek: The Original Series] who's only been explored in two episodes of the original series -- three if you consider how [the rejected pilot for the original series] "The Cage" works into the puzzle in TOS. When we think about the idea of Captain Pike, it opens up some large possibilities. We will never say never to exploring him a little bit more.

Actually I'm surprised they are going for season 2. They rushed the ending of season 1, and it seemed they were to switch the series off for good.

The last 3 episodes were a total mess. All out of sudden, Lorca became a dumb evil character and was wiped out in a blink of an eye. It's like Gene Roddenberry intervened the show by saying: "I want no ambiguous characters in my beloved Star Trek, make Lorca a flat evil character. And keep things simpler and happier, no more dark tone or shocking deaths!". So the last episode was just like that.

Tyler, who really was a Klingon, now became good again, and everyone is willing to give him a second chance, given his crimes were far worse than Burnham's. Mentally unstable is the lesser diagnosis, he should have been confined for life. His whole arc was nonsense (same with L'Rell).

Overall, first half of the season was much better. The second one was terrible, plagued by character and plot inconsistencies, but also bad camera work and even blatant continuity errors.

Production starts Monday. Frakes will direct episodes 2 & 10. Spoiler below!

Frakes also told the crowd at El Paso Comic Con that the second episode in Discovery’s second season will include flashbacks of a young Spock and a young Michael Burnham. We have seen flashbacks of a young Michael Burnham (played by Arista Arnhim) before, in the first two episodes of Discovery (“The Vulcan Hello” and “Battle at the Binary Stars”).
