I very much enjoyed this as well... I've always liked the show, but with each episode, their footing becomes more and more secure, and I think you can tell the actors are becoming comfortable with their characters, and it shows.
I always ground myself by going back and looking at the first 10 episodes of all the Trek series. TNG really didn't hit its stride until season 2, and even TOS dropped a few clunkers in there... so I've always approached this series with the attitude that it would take some time until it found its groove.
IMO every version of Trek have had pretty shaky first seasons. I'm even going so far as call most of the TOS S01 episodes straight up bad, at least viewed with modern eyes.
shareYep, quite impressive, I enjoyed it. Finding out later than Jonathan Frakes directed it just makes more sense as to why it was probably the strongest Discovery episode so far.

shareI'm just watching the Mirror Mirror episode. My problem so far with it is that the Empire was never implied to be human only. Remember, Spock, a half Vulcan was still First Officer. He threatens Sulu that his operatives would avenge his death and some of them were Vulcans. Which implies that other Vulcans were also Imperial officers and crew men.
Yup. I think this is based on a combination of Enterprise and DS9's Mirror 'verse minutiae though. There were the straight-up slaves, and then there were some from the same species as the slaves who were elevated to higher positions, some with token ranks and privileges. Spock likely only got so far because he was seen as an exception, highly loyal to the empire. (Actually even in TOS, it's shown that MU humans aren't any different from Prime humans in their basic psychology; the differences are all cultural. Mirror Kirk's "captain's woman" genuinely wanted to come back to Prime Kirk's world with him, despite knowing nothing about it-- based purely on witnessing a few noble actions and words.)
