Be honest, is Discovery really worse than Voyager, TNG, Enterprise?

I'm just curious

reply

Ah, but almost half a short season vs. 7 seasons (or 4 in the case of ENT) is rather early to rank Discovery among its predecessors. Personally I enjoy it a lot, but I try not to assume that everyone's going to like the same things I do. It would be easier to answer this question if you said (1) what you're looking for in a ST series, (2) which of the previous series you liked best, and (3) why.

So far I will say it is a contender for best first season of a ST franchise series. Most of them didn't really get into their groove until later on. I'm not saying Discovery has been perfect, but for most folks giving the show a fair chance, it seems this show got itself sorted on episode 3.

reply

At the moment, yes. Yes it is, and it's not even close.

reply

Agreed. But like plainstyle posted above; it's a bit too early to call it.

reply

I'd be more optimistic if there was even one, just one, likeable character in the show...

reply

That's just a matter of taste so I won't go there.

reply

Brr.... I wonder if episode 9 is when discovery turned into voyager.

Spore drive is offline and they are in the middle of nowhere - this could turn into a 5 season voyage home - AKA - Voyager

reply

They're in an alternate universe now. Well, technically their universe is alternate too - from the standpoint of classic Star Trek. Hence all the inconsistencies. I think this is going to take on aspects of Voyager but the mess they're in is even more complicated.

reply

Yes and it doesn’t feel like Trek at all.

reply

Makes me wonder what a rated R terintino Star Trek is gonna feel. Weve never seen anything like that on star trek.

reply

Bad on virtually every level
- continuity with previous Trek
- continuity within itself
- likability of characters
- quality of dialog
- filming style
- story interest
- science logic
- carrying on the Trek vision

The only thing it does well is ape the look of the JJ Abrams movies.

reply

Agreed on all points. The must insulting part for me, is dropping the torch of what Star Trek is. If you're not gonna make a Star Trek show, why even put the name on it. Maybe people would like the show better if it was it's own thing, instead of pretending it somehow fits into the greater Star Trek universe when it very clearly does not.

reply

Thanks for your thoughts!
You probably realize it already, but the reason to call it Trek is for marketing purposes.
They know if they do a lot more people will check it out and feel like they need to watch it, even if it's not good.

It is to *me*.

But if others enjoy the show better or even as much as any other Trek, then good for them. I'm jealous of them really. I was hoping for another Trek franchise and wish I could have stayed with it.

reply

If someone likes the same dark space ar soap opera again and again ..., Star Trek Discovery is the perfect series. But for any Star Trek fan it isnt an option at all. Its even the exact opposite what Star Trek is.

reply

I watched the first two episodes and did not like them a bit.
I had to sign-up for CBS All-Access or whatever it is called, and
paid extra money for no commercials.
As I was watching, I kept getting commercials though.
I checked with CBS support and they said that the no-commerical
interruptions was on for some shows and in Star Trek they would
still have commercial breaks.
They lied and cheated on their subscriptions, and whatever this is
it is not really Star Trek in any recognizable form or even related.
I cancelled, got my money back and will never again watch another
stupid Star Trek series, or trust CBS.

Wow. I watched the first one on CBS then the next couple via an Android box before bailing. I did so because I was sure that no typical network fare would be worth paying for, much less watching (although I do watch some network stuff). I can't believe that CBS not only charges to watch this show but give you commercials as well for the privilege.

That's ridiculous. I was never going to pay for it to begin with, but it's shit like this that almost makes me feel justified in torrenting it.

reply

Discovery is your FIRST Star Trek series? It's easily the WORST of the lot. Don't give up with any of the others, you don't know what you're missing!

reply

Are you talking to me? I watched the original series when it first aired. I won't watch Discovery because of the dishonest practices of CBS. I liked the original series, but the Next Generation and Deep Space 9 I did not care for. Voyager was interesting, but but then I was over the Star Trek thing. I did find Enterprise interesting. Of the movies I did not care for any of them. I thought the whale movie was entertaining, and the one where they went back in time to fight the Borg ... First Contact. I think the original series at the age I watched it was really great.

reply

It would be awesome if it would be only worse then any Star Trek series. But the real problem is that this isnt Star Trek at all and never was meant to be Star Trek.

This is yet another boring and dark Space war soap opera (as so many others before). Its as much Star Trek as it is a carrier ;) . All CBS did was putting their Star Trek logo onto such series so that they get a few viewers more. But that only meant that they made their franchise worthless at exact that moment.

reply

CBS, you mean. But yes.

reply

Indeed. Corrected it.
